Job overview

Bacon’s College was established in the Surrey Docks peninsula in Rotherhithe, South East London in 1991 as a City Technology College, becoming an academy in 2007 and joined the United Learning Trust in 2018. Bacon’s has long been an important part of the fabric of the local community in southeast London and has served the community in its various forms for over three hundred years. We are proud of that history and contribution and of the way the College has evolved and adapted to meet the needs of its young people.

Bacon’s is a thriving community that is welcoming of students of all faiths and those of none. Staff and students value the distinctive nature of its Christian ethos to which every member of its community contributes. It celebrates the differences that define it as well as the common humanity that unites all its members. The value system and ethos of Bacon’s is inclusive of all within a strong Christian ethos, characterised by the quality and openness of the positive relationships between students, staff and the wider community. These are foregrounded in our lessons but also in our extra-curricular offer, ranging from sport and debating to charity work and peer mediation.

Today, Bacon’s sits in modern and well-equipped facilities in an area that is rapidly changing and growing. We are fortunate to offer fantastic media and IT facilities and excellent sporting provision. Learning is at the heart of everything we do, and we have the highest aspirations for our students, determined that they can achieve and overcome any barriers that may lie in their path. A significant proportion of our students go on to university each year and a culture of aspiration and achievement is evident.

Bacon’s is embarking on a rapid improvement journey and many of the elements are already in place to make it a fantastic place to work and make an impact.

The role

Bacon’s College is home to United Learning’s South East London Cluster. The Cluster staff serve three United Learning schools: Bacon’s College, Sedgehill Academy and The John Roan School. We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced, vibrant, committed Cluster HR Manager with strong HR advisory skills to join us under the line management of our Executive Business Manager.

This role will be responsible for a wide range of HR duties including but not limited to TUPE, grievances, disciplinary cases, dismissals, redundancies, maternity/paternity conditions, contractual and job description changes, sickness absence management and capability procedures. The role will ensure the smooth running of the HR administrative processes through strong line management, and ongoing coaching and mentoring of the Cluster HR team.

 About You

You will be a confident HR professional and will enjoy the opportunity to engage with the leadership teams across the three schools, giving well founded advice and guidance based on a strong knowledge of employment law, both statutory and case law. Outstanding interpersonal skills are essential in support of building excellent relationships with staff at all levels, whilst always ensuring that safeguarding practices for a safer workforce are consistently applied and monitored. You will understand the importance of safer recruitment and hold the HR Team to strong account for the fulfilment of these processes. You will also oversee the successful administration of the payroll across all three schools ensuring constant open and accurate communication with the finance team to support them with precise management accounting.

You will hold or be working towards the CIPD Level 7 qualification, and you will be capable of making successful decisions autonomously whilst always knowing when to seek advice from your line manager or the central HR team. You will also be committed to continuous improvement and innovative practice and will as part of your personal development always be seeking ways to improve the service. You will be joining a friendly and supportive team that is hard-working and closeknit with a shared mission of providing excellence to the schools that it serves.

 United Learning

Bacon’s College joined United Learning in Spring 2018, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.
