Job overview

A very exciting opportunity has arisen for an inspirational and dynamic Assistant SENDCo to make a significant contribution across Years 5 to 8 at Hexham Middle School. We are looking for an enthusiastic, ambitious, and caring professional who places pupil success and wellbeing at the heart of what they do. The Assistant SENDCo is responsible for shaping our pupils to be respectful young people who have a strong engagement in their education and personal development and who have high aspirations for themselves and their futures. The Assistant SENDCo will support the operational leadership of the school’s SEND provision and work under the leadership of the SENDCo.

This very important role involves working with the schools’ SENDCo and wider senior leadership team to support the development of SEND provision and to empower pupils with Special Educational Needs to have full and equal access to educational opportunities within school. We are seeking an individual with an enthusiasm for supporting children with additional needs and someone who can demonstrate strong line management skills.

The Assistant SENDCo will lead and manage the provision of special educational needs learning support and be responsible for raising standards and ensuring high quality learning, teaching, and behaviour including effective use of resources to support high standards of achievement and progress for all pupils.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the SENDCo and SLT to sustain effective SEND whole school teaching through an inclusive curriculum, evaluating the quality of teaching and standards of pupils’ achievement, including access to additional support provision.
  • Support the SENDCo in the devising, implementation and updating of policies, which reflect the school’s commitment to high achievement and expectations, and outstanding teaching and learning for pupils with additional needs.
  • Support the SENDCo to ensure a robust process of identification, assessment and provision for all children with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities for the SEND register.
  • Conduct the day-to-day line management, deployment and appraisal of the Learning Support Assistants across the school.

As a school within Hadrian Learning Trust, we can offer you:

·        A supportive, talented and very dedicated staff team.

·        The opportunity to learn new skills and develop professionally.

·        An inclusive and collaborative working environment in a new school building as part of Hadrian Learning Trust.

·        A comprehensive wellbeing package and access to the on-site fitness suite.

We are a large and flourishing middle school set in the historical market town of Hexham and are co-located with Queen Elizabeth High School as part of Hadrian Learning Trust. In September 2021, we moved into brand new school buildings with state-of-the-art learning facilities. We cherish the strong partnerships that exist between pupils, parents/carers, staff and the local community making this a successful, friendly and welcoming school. Pupils at Hexham Middle School have an eagerness to learn and achieve very well academically.

We pride ourselves on the care and support we give the children, and you will be at the forefront of pastoral care, wider pupil support and inclusion. You will work with the children and their parents/carers to build strong, positive relationships to enable them to fulfil their potential and thrive. You will be ambitious for the success of all learners and will establish an environment where high expectations are the norm. You will support vulnerable learners, each with individual needs, to learn, achieve and shine during their middle school years.

The successful applicant will access a supportive induction and professional development package. The postholder will mainly be office-based but will be required to support learning and interventions across the school and to evaluate the quality of provision across the school’s curriculum. The working pattern can be discussed at interview.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be required to obtain a satisfactory Certificate of Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Ofsted Report

“The executive headteacher, ably supported by the head of school, senior team and governing body, is determined to make the school the very best it can be. The school continues to improve at a pace. Currently, from their different starting points, pupils make good progress in most subjects, including English and mathematics. Extra-curricular activities are given a high priority, as leaders say that ‘arts, sport and other opportunities help shape pupils as individuals and as citizens of the wider world’.”
