Job overview

We are proud that Outwood Academy Portland is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. We are an 11-18 academy based in the large friendly town of Worksop, near Sheffield and Nottingham.

Since joining the Outwood Family in 2012, our students have achieved impressive exam result success.

We have created an educational environment where staff and students constantly strive to improve; where teachers sharpen their skills and expand their repertoires to deliver an outstanding learning experience; and where teachers, classroom assistants, mentors, tutors, inclusion support assistants and students operate as a seamless team. This enables everybody, staff and students, to not only see but also help fulfil the potential in each other. Following its latest visit, Ofsted noted that our ‘teachers and support staff comment positively about the opportunities they have for regular training to develop their skills.’

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.

The MFL Department Outwood Academy Portland is a large department of friendly staff who work collaboratively and support one another to produce consistently excellent results, with a 100% pass rate and a Value Added score of +1.5 in 2023, with 93.1% 4+.

We offer French and Spanish from Year 7 through to A-level (at our Post-16 site situated in close proximity). In year 7 our students learn both languages on a dual languages programme and then make a choice into year 8 about their future study, with the option to continue with both languages or focus on their preferred language. At GCSE we also offer students who speak an additional language the opportunity to develop their skills through a weekly enrichment programme to allow them to gain a qualification in their home language. We currently support students who speak Polish, Russian, Turkish, Italian, Mandarin and Cantonese.

We take pride in our enrichment programmes and our focus on cultural capital both within and outside of curriculum time. We host a generous number of KS4 weekly enrichment sessions targeted at our Year 10 and 11 students as well as a weekly KS3 enrichment for our keen younger students where they can participate in language games, competitions and cultural activities. Throughout the year we host whole school house competitions focused on hispanic and francophone culture, as well in-house theatre experiences, French/Spanish breakfasts and a range of other cultural activities. We are looking for an individual who is equally enthusiastic about promoting the richness and diversity of language and culture.

As a member of the team you would have your own classroom in the department area, where there is also an IT suite with a class set of computers and headphones and access to a wide range of online resources/applications. GCSE students are provided with revision guides and workbooks and all homework is set collaboratively and monitored online by the team. The academy itself is easily accessible with secure, on-site free parking for staff.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate and enthusiastic about teaching languages, who recognises the value of cultural capital and celebrating linguistic diversity and who embodies and models the school values of Be Kind, Be Proud, and Be Resilient. The successful applicant should be able to teach both French and Spanish at KS3 with at least one language to GCSE and ideally A-level.

We would be delighted to answer any questions you may have about our academy or to invite you to come and tour the academy and visit us. Please don’t hesitate to contact us: l.barnfather@portland.outwood.com
