Strike a balance between light-hearted celebration and solemn remembrance this December. We’ve got lesson plans, assemblies and teaching resources to help you tackle important issues such as Aids and Human Rights, as well as celebrating midwinter festivals such as Christmas, Hanukkah and the winter solstice.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery (2) Explore and discuss the stories of people who suffered because of slavery, and to give due reverence to the victims of the slave trade.

World Aids Day (1) Unite in the fight against HIV and raise awareness of those living with the effects of AIDS. Look at AIDS from a global perspective and help children to understand its causes and transmission.

Human Rights Day (10) Help students to understand the rights to which they are all entitled. Examine the ways in which human rights are compromised across the globe, and discuss rights and responsibilities with your class.

Winter Solstice (21) Use the shortest day of the year as an opportunity to teach pupils about the seasons and our Earth’s climate, as well as taking a look at the cultural significance of the solstice around the world.

Hanukkah (6 – 14 Dec) Often described as the Jewish festival of light, you can celebrate this midwinter festival with dreidel games, assemblies and lessons on the history and traditions associated with Hanukkah.

Christmas (25) is all around us in December, so why not use these hand-picked resources to find out who has been naughty and who has been nice, as well as exploring Christian traditions and modern stories of Santa and his elves.
