Saturday 15th October 2011 the issue of racism in football reared its ugly head when Manchester United's defender Patrice Evra claimed that Liverpool's Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez had taunted and racially abused him. Luis Suarez was found guilty, through his own admission of using a racist term and was banned for eight matches with a fine of £40,000.

In the return meeting between the two sides on the 11th February 2012, Luis Suarez returned to Liverpool's starting line-up but controversially refused to shake Patrice Evra's hand on live television. This prompted an angry reaction and unsavoury events throughout the game and after. This is seen by many to have damaged the hard work put in by anti-racism campaigns in football and highlights that even in the modern era, racism is still very much a problem.
