RSS on the My TES page

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and this technology allows you to pull together regularly updated content (news, blogs, forums etc) from a variety of sources. We have already added the TES news feed for you on the My TES page, so you get an automatic update on the news from The TES every week.

How to add a new RSS feed

In this example we’re going to add the BBC education news feed to your My TES page

  1. Log in and select ‘My TES’ from the menu.
  2. Locate the section called ‘Get news updates via RSS’ and then click on the ‘Add more RSS feeds’ link.

  1. First give your web feed a title, BBC education news is as good as any. In the URL box you then need to insert the BBC education news feed address, http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/education/rss.xml.

  1. Then click on the Add button and scroll down the page to click on the ‘Finished? Save personal information’ link.
  2. When you return to the My TES page you should now see the BBC education news set up as a feed.

RSS’ing other TES content

There are other areas of the TES site that have RSS feeds. For example if you’ve carried out a particular job search (say all classroom teacher jobs in the East Midlands) then you’ll see at the top of that search results page the orange RSS logo. Click on that logo and you’ll see the feed link in the web address box in your browser. Just follow the instructions above to add this link to your RSS feeds on your My TES page.

You can also use RSS to keep you up to date with the latest resources added in your subject area. For example, if you’re interested in secondary biology resources, just visit the secondary Biology channel page and you’ll notice the RSS logo top right. Click on the logo and copy the web address in your browser window. Paste this web address into the My TES RSS feeds and it will keep you up to date with the latest resources added in this subject area.

You can do the same with forums, just go into the subject area you’re interested in or the specific thread you want to keep track of and then hit the RSS button to pick up the RSS address.
