Height and Length, a TESiboard Measure Collection
Making comparisons between objects is important to encourage the development of mathematical language. These first activities ask children to estimate how many of one animal will equal the height or length of a larger one. Pupils estimate first, then test their predictions. A report of the pupil’s outcomes is created.
Pupils use animals as non-standard units to measure the height of other animals and to compare their relative heights.

To support children in beginning to read a scale, these are simple activities to measure to the nearest metre, in either height or length. The animals’ different heights and lengths offer opportunities for comparisons and difference questions.

The following activities look at measuring without a context, and are useful for gauging children’s understanding of both relative lengths and metric units:
Pupils build sentences to describe the length of the lines in relation to each other, comparing and recording the difference.
Pupils join sets of 2 or more lines to add up to a total of 1 metre. When joined, the lengths of lines are also shown as a sum, e.g. 70cm+20cm+10cm=1m.
Reading numbered divisions on a scale:
This activity asks pupils to measure the height and length of (and weigh) the animals and to compare data. Lots of opportunities to draw out comparison language and to discuss reading scales with unmarked intervals.
