'Kings College Vocational Centre – building skills and constructing your future'

Judges’ comments:

This bid shows good vision and involvement of a wider community. Academic study is not the route for all young people, and this school actively recognises that a more vocational learning experience would benefit many of their students.

Kings College is a secondary school situated in an area of high deprivation on the outskirts of Guildford. Over 30% of our students are eligible for Pupil Premium and 27% receive additional learning support.

Our students and their progress are our absolute priority. We recognise that the traditional academic curriculum is not the best route for all students and that inclusive education must provide the opportunity to develop more practical skills that will enable them to be successful in future employment.

We would like to be able to provide an on-site provision to enable students to develop skills and qualifications in the building industry. Currently some students attend an off-site provision for vocational study. However, many find this a challenge as they need the regular support from staff that know them well and are able to motivate and encourage them. One day a week off-site courses can also create a challenge to the timetabled curriculum which can impact on students achieving the key numeracy and literacy skills that are the foundation for life-long learning.

Winning this competition would enable us to create a classroom to develop vocational courses. It would include a teaching space, practical work area and access to an outside area for practical work, such as bricklaying. As an inclusive school this on-site provision would ensure our most vulnerable students are fully integrated, engaged with learning and better prepared for the world of work.

To maximise the use of the space we would look to create new opportunities for extracurricular activities for both our students and members of our local community. This is an exciting project and we would welcome the opportunity to share our vision with you in more detail.
