Resources: Design Technology/Secondary/KS4/Product Design
The piece has been designed to provoke a response. I would suggest using the resource with your KS4 and KS5 groups only, some of the content may prove a challenge for younger groups.
- The piece is particularly useful for both KS3 and KS4 Graphic Products and Product Design students. It would no doubt function well, with the students working in small design groups. All activities are designed to be completed within one hour.
- What is it? - This resource is presented via a simple PowerPoint of some 18 slides, with a list of key considerations given on the final slide. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and in the case of this piece; no truer word has been spoken. It focuses on a number of graphical and product based faux pas, some with a sexual theme, so be warned. It illustrates so very clearly how an unchecked or ill considered design can end up being absolutely ridiculous. The PowerPoint also illustrates how graphics when used in the wrong way can really confuse the end user and complicate a task further. It considers inspiration from nature, design evolution, form over function and interesting packaging. The resource has received over 4600 views with a further 2400 downloads, so has proved useful for a number of you.
- How could it be used? - As stated, use this one with your older, shall we say, more worldly students. Some of the content will 100% provoke a response and get them thinking straight away, the images are clear and tend to make their respective points immediately. I am not sure that you could just simply show the whole PowerPoint but instead use it as an ongoing resource, a point of reference if you like. I believe this piece would be great when designing or developing a product and not just in resistant materials, as half of the resource focuses squarely on graphic products. You could easily use this in groups, to encourage them to get thinking about how their ideas would stand up in the real world and how they could impact on a day to day basis. It could be used to suggest how a product may very well evolve over time but also how it could be inspired by solutions that already exist in nature. The considerations given at the end of the piece would most definitely help them think about the finer details and not just the end product. Questions like; always remember the purpose of your design, consider your users and audience, think about the environment your design will exist in, changes and improvements only work if properly merged into your original design, review your designs regularly.
- This resource is a lot more useful than it may at first appear.
- How have you used this resource? - I have not yet had the opportunity to use this scheme but I will be introducing it to my sixth form KS5 students later this week. They are at the model making stage before producing their final outcome and I feel would really benefit from some of the questions begged by this resource. My year 11 groups will most definitely be able to use it when starting to research their design topic for their upcoming GCSE final exam. The key here, with the Yr11 groups will be to harness their immediate thinking and I will need to consider this before introducing the topic. Some way of recording their thoughts will be imperative, whether it be via a spider diagram or even by audio recording. You will need to record as much thinking as possible if it is to be of real use later on. I will leave you with some of the thoughts and views of teachers that have downloaded this resource.
- We may well finish our key stage 3 modules ahead of schedule this term and I would be happy to keep this project in the background and let the students try out a couple of the tasks that would be fun and educational.
