Role Description

The Debating and Public Speaking Convenor promotes and organises debating and public speaking within the Secondary School and works with the Debating and Public Speaking Captains to develop student leadership in this area. The Debating and Public Speaking Convenor reports to the Principal through the Deputy Principal.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

 

Debating

  • Promotes debating within the school.
  • Organises inter-house debating in Term 4.
  • Develops clear guidelines for the selection of teams.
  • Selects teams for debating competitions.
  • Co-ordinates and attends debating competitions (ISDA, CSDA, (both Friday), Archdale (Tuesday), Festival of Speech and others approved by the Principal).
  • Co-ordinates coaches for teams in debating competitions. This includes selection of coaches, allocation of coaches to teams, monitoring attendance of coaches at coaching sessions and debates, and liaison with the Business Office regarding prompt payment of coaches.
  • Ensures that all Debating Coaches have the required Working With Children Check clearance and ID check completed.
  • Organises adjudicators for the CSDA debating competitions.
  • Involves the Debating and Public Speaking Captains in the organisation of debating within the school.
  • Co-ordinates and attends debating evenings hosted by Loreto Kirribilli. This includes liaison with parents regarding supper; the setting up of host and debating rooms; communication with visiting schools regarding location of the school, car park use and other directions; liaison with Security; signage and communication with the cleaners.
  • Provides Year 11 student adjudicators for Junior School debating competition.
  • Organises staff and coaches assistance for home debates.
  • Writing of articles for newsletters on a weekly basis.
