Design & Technology Teacher (Senior School)

Canberra Grammar School in Red Hill

Part-time Temporary for Term 4 2013 (Monday 14 October – Wednesday 11 December)with the possibility of extension into 2014

Canberra Grammar School has a strong Design Art Technology Department, offering courses from Years 7 to 12 in many areas of the visual arts and design and technology, including courses in the resistant materials of wood, metal and plastic. The Department is housed in a central building of approximately ten workshops, computer laboratory and classrooms equipped with electronic whiteboards.

This vacancy is due to a temporary leave opportunity and in the first instance is for Term 4 in 2013 only, although there is the possibility that the position may become ongoing in 2014. It involves the teaching of the compulsory introductory one-semester course in Design and Technology to Year 7 and the first term of the NSW HSC course in Design and Technology. It is a part-time temporary position of approximately 0.4 FTE.

Canberra Grammar School was founded in 1929 as an independent Anglican school to provide education to the children of Australia’s then new national capital. The first Headmaster, Canon William Edwards, expressed the School’s core principle, that it should educate the whole student in the rounded, liberal tradition. Since then, the School has retained its commitment to nurturing the intellectual, spiritual, cultural, social and physical dimensions of every student.

The School’s curriculum, teaching and learning practices, pastoral care and co-curricular program are all designed to reflect that, ensuring that each boy has a balanced experience of School life. It is important to us that boys take part in a range of activities, striving for excellence in the classroom, on the playing fields, on stage or on camp, supporting each other in tutorials, giving in service to the community and reflecting on their inner life in Chapel. Our Anglican foundation shapes our religious expression and provides our guiding values, but we aim always to be sincere, respectful and reflective in spiritual matters, rather than assertive or dogmatic, and we welcome students and staff of all faiths and backgrounds.

The School operates as a number of communities within the larger whole. In the Primary School, our Northside and Southside Infants campuses are designed to provide the family-friendly intimacy needed in the early years, while our Junior School classes (Years 3 to 6) give every boy personal connection with his teachers. Likewise, the house and tutorial structure of the Senior School (Years 7 to 12) provides support and attention to each boy as well as a warm pastoral environment in which to develop social and leadership skills. This applies as much to our day houses as to the boarding community which provides a constant living heart to the School.

As a boys’ school from Year 3 onwards, we pay attention to the distinct intellectual and physical needs of boys as they mature but our culture is not overtly masculine. Instead, we believe that single-sex education offers boys the opportunity to flourish in the creative and performing arts and the intellectual sphere as well as on the sporting fields.

We nurture close connections with our sister foundation, Canberra Girls’ Grammar School, and with other schools of our region.
