Author: Justin Garrick, Head of School
Revised: October 2013
This role exists to realise the School’s strategic aspirations for Co-curricular opportunity and distinction, as outlined in Canberra Grammar School: Strategic Directions Towards 2020. It is an expression of the School’s aspiration to educate students who are intelligent, innovative, and internationally-minded; who are confident, creative and compassionate leaders of the future. It also embodies the School’s belief that human capacity and intelligence comes in many forms and is drawn out through opportunities to experience the full range of our intellectual, physical, cultural, social and spiritual life. In addition, it reflects the School’s commitment to the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate (currently offered in the Senior School and soon to be offered in the Primary School), and the School’s desire to see creativity, action and service as integral to education at all levels of the School.
The Director of Creative and Co-curricular Education reports directly to the Head of School and is a member of the Canberra Grammar School Leadership Team (SLT) with overall responsibility for the co-curricular opportunities, participation and performance of students in the School. The Director has responsibility for ensuring consistency and continuity of approaches to co-curricular education throughout both the Primary and Senior Schools and will work closely with the Heads of Primary and Senior Schools, as well as with other members of the School and Primary Leadership Teams.
The appointment arises through a reshuffle of the SLT to facilitate the next stage of the School’s development. It is essential that all members of the SLT be able to work closely and positively with each other and it is expected that the roles of all Directors will evolve in the process of significantly enhancing the School’s academic performance, pastoral culture, co-curricular activities, community engagement and physical facilities. The School aspires within a short time to be the most successful, dynamic and distinctive school in Canberra and one of the most high-profile and innovative independent schools in Australia.
The Director will be exceptionally well qualified, imaginative, and ambitious to make a difference. He or she is likely to have had leadership experience and the potential for headship within one or two career steps.
