Lauriston Girls’ School operates its Armadale and Howqua campuses in order to accomplish its educational objective of providing a holistic education to students as they undertake their educational journey. While separated by distance, the campuses form a single entity, with Armadale and Howqua staff members working together to achieve the Vision and Values of Lauriston Girls’ School.

 

While the Howqua management team takes responsibility for daily operations and implementation of the curriculum at the Howqua campus, they work collaboratively with the Executive and senior management team at Armadale on all matters related to the strategic direction, marketing, efficient running of the campus and the welfare of its students, staff and parents. There is an open and transparent flow of communications and information between the two campuses.

 

The primary focus of the Howqua management team is to lead, engage, support and inspire the Howqua staff, students and parents to accomplish Lauriston’s educational vision and values for this unique Year 9 program. The Howqua management team is responsible for the continued success of the academic and outdoor programs and the pastoral support of students and staff.

 

The Howqua campus uses a distributive leadership model where there is broad consultation with staff and their expertise is utilised in strategic, operational and curriculum matters. The Howqua management team is consultative in its decision making processes, both within the team itself and with the Howqua staff.

 

Direct Report: Howqua Campus Assistant Principal

 

Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for the planning, development and implementation of the outdoor program at Howqua.
  • Full responsibility to ensure the outdoor program reflects the campus objectives of challenge, skill development, teamwork, positive relationship with the environment, interdependency, self- reliance and positive self esteem
  • Lead and mentor staff and actively seek to build teams

 

Key Tasks:

 

Program and Policy development:

  • Develop a yearly outdoor program
  • In conjunction with the management team plan and implement a parent reporting process related to the outdoor program and progress of individual students
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Principal and the Howqua Director of Operations and Human Resources, undertake a recruitment process for casual staff and monitor performance
  • Ensure that there is adequately staffing for outdoor programs
  • Ensure that there is a process for debrief/feedback and evaluation for staff and students
  • Organise training for staff

 

Through the Outdoor Studies classes, administer and review student logbooks Program co-ordination:

  • Ensure that equipment and resources are planned and prepared well in advance of activities or trips
  • Determine and arrange transport needs for each trip
  • Determine communications resources and allocate staff on each trip or activity
  • Review and update Outdoor Program dietary requirements
  • Evaluate the dietary planning after each trip or activity and provide feedback to the catering staff Position

 

Description – Howqua Director of Outdoor Programs

  • Ensure all leading staff have detailed trip or activity details including route information one month prior to the start of the program
  • In conjunction with the Co-ordinator of Pastoral Care and Boarding establish the makeup of each outdoor activity group
  • Brief communications staff fully

 

Risk Management:

  • Utilise a risk management procedure for each trip or activity and regularly evaluate
  • Train and induct staff
  • Ensure that all programs meet or exceed industry standards
  • Coordinate an ongoing appraisal, maintenance and/or replacement program for outdoor program equipment

 

Management of resources:

  • Plan and manage the outdoor programs budget that meets the needs of the program
  • Coordinate resources with the Howqua management team and staff Communication:
  • Contribute to the regular school community e-newsletters
  • Publish and develop promotional material about the outdoor program and specific trips for parents and visitors
  • Present at information evenings
  • Present at information mornings and campus open days Management and administration:
  • Participate as an active member of the Howqua management team
  • As part of the management team, give direction and feedback to staff regularly on programs and pastoral care
  • With the management team, lead regular meetings to discuss and plan for whole campus initiatives and administration
  • With the management team develop, evaluate and review policies and procedures relevant to the campus
  • In conjunction with the management team, be responsible for staff support and morale
  • Participate in on-going performance management of staff
  • Implement all Lauriston Girls’ School policies Community Mindedness:
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Marketing and Communications on the promotion of the Howqua campus to current and prospective parents and students
  • Initiate strategies which will enable current and prospective parents and students to understand the benefits of the Howqua experience
  • Collaborate with the management team in the production of e-communications from Howqua to parents, and written articles for School publications, such as Lauriston Life

 

Financial Planning:

  • In collaboration with the management team prepare, oversee and manage an annual operating budget and capital expenditure budget
