# National Strategies Secondary Maths Collection - Improving Learning in Mathematics: Mostly Shape and Space

#### TES Secondary maths resource collections

Collection Author: Craig Barton - Maths AST and creator of www.mrbartonmaths.com (TES Name: mrbartonmaths)

Electronic copies of the excellent resources from the Improving Learning in Mathematics, otherwise known as the Standards Units. If you haven’t used these before, they are definitely worth a look, and if you haven’t used them for a while, they are definitely worth a second look! This collection is “Mostly Shape and Space”

SS1 Classifying shapes

• Activities to help learners of secondary mathematics name and classify polygons, develop mathematical language to describe the similarities and differences between shapes and develop explanations as to why combinations of particular properties are impossible.

SS2 Understanding perimeter and area

• Activities to help learners of secondary mathematics to understand the difference between perimeter and area and give them practice in calculating the area and perimeters of rectangular shapes.

SS3 Dissecting a square

• Activities to enable learners of secondary mathematics to express a part/whole diagram in fractions or percentages, convert a fraction to a percentage, calculate areas of shapes and add, subtract and multiply fractions.

SS4 Evaluating statements about length and area

• Activities to help learners of secondary mathematics to understand comcepts of length and area, revise the names of plane shapes, develop reasoning through considering areas of shapes and to construct their own examples to justify conjectures.

• Activities to enable learners of secondary mathematics to explore the relationship between linear and area enlargement, substitute into algebraic statements, discuss some common misconceptions about enlargement.

SS6 Representing 3D shapes

• Activities to enable learners of secondary mathematics to interpret 2D representations of 3D shapes, analyse 3D shapes using plans, elevations and isometric drawings and to develop their reasoning ability in spacial contexts.

SS7 Transforming shapes

• Activities to enable learners of secondary mathematics to recognise and visualise transformations of 2D shapes, translate, rotate, reflect and combine these transformations.

SS8 Developing an exam question: Transformations

• Activities to help learners of secondary mathematics to use past examination papers creatively, to recognise transformations of 2D shapes and to develop their ability to explore their own questions in this context.
