Outdoor Education Teacher (12 month replacement)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified, experienced and motivated professionals for the full time replacement position of Outdoor Education Teacher commencing in 2014.


The Outdoor Education program demands a high level of energy and input from its staff, and a commitment to the School, its ethos, and most importantly its students. A professional approach to all aspects of the implementation of the Outdoor Education program will be required of all members of the Outdoor Education Department.

Outdoor Education Teachers must hold;

  • A current manual Drivers Licence
  • A current Wilderness First Aid qualification (min 4 days, preferably 7 days)
  • A current Boat Licence
  • Endorsed Licence (light rigid)
  • Appropriate swimming supervision qualification (ie. Surf bronze, Swift water rescue)
  • Recognised Outdoor Education qualifications or equivalent ‘tagging’ in specific and appropriate activities
  • Teacher qualification and registration (or be undertaking some)
  • Professional Development areas (ie. Anaphylaxis training, Asthma training, CFA wildfire training, 4WD training)
  • Knowledge and use of computer based appropriate programs


Specific Responsibilities

  • Tasks as allocated by Head of Outdoor Education
  • Assume responsibility from start to finish for Years 4-10 Programs
  • Be familiar with and work supportive of the philosophy (general and specific) of Outdoor Education Department at Carey
  • Liaise constantly with Head of Outdoor Education regarding details of particular year level programs.


Tasks not limited to:

1. Program design, preparation and documentation for all year levels

2. Management and documentation of difficult students / situations, first aid

3. Preparation / presentation of Incident Report Forms

4. Distribution, collection, overview of medicals forms and student special needs

5. Liaise with parents, students, staff and specialists regarding students and issues

6. Liaise and brief with Carey staff re specific programs

7. Manage equipment and program resources, including repairs, maintenance, ordering and sourcing (including, rafts, pacer sail boats, kayaks, canoes, sea kayaks, mountain bikes; general gear- tents, japaras, overpants, wetsuits, PFDs etc)

8. Preparation and packing of gear and equipment for specific programs

9. Food organisation (dietary requirements, food ordering and auditing)

10. Travel details, bus and other bookings
