Secondary maths - Catchphrase

TES Secondary maths resource collections

Collection Author: Craig Barton - Maths AST and creator of www.mrbartonmaths.com (TES Name: mrbartonmaths)

I love stumbling upon a type of resource that I haven’t seen before, and that is exactly what happened whilst I was flicking through the TES Maths Resources recently. Amidst the deluge of top quality resources, my eyes were drawn to a single word – not algebra, or fractions, but… Catchphrase!

It scares me to think that there will be teachers too young to remember the classic game show hosted by the legend Roy Walker, able assisted by the worryingly yellow Mr Chips. Can you guess the well-known phrase represented by Mr Chips bouncing up and down? I used to love Roy explaining enthusiastically that “it’s good, but it’s not right”, even when it very clearly wasn’t a good answer at all.

Anyway, that show is one of my all-time favourites, and Laura Rees Hughes has thought of a novel, innovative way of bringing the early Saturday evening game-show excitement into the maths classroom.

Here is Laura to explain more:

When you need a fun plenary to check understanding which the whole class will want to be involved with then Catchphrase is for you! In order to reveal the picture catchphrase behind pupils have to answer questions (which you can either target at individuals or at the whole class using mini whiteboards). Some of the student’s guesses will have you and the class in stitches so it’s a really great note to end a lesson on! As well as this you will know which students have learnt what and who needs some more support next lesson.

Enjoy these fantastic resources, and please also take a moment to visit Laura’s Maths Blog as it is excellent!
