# Secondary Maths Collection – Maths CSI Collection

#### TES Secondary maths resource collections

Collection Author: Craig Barton - Maths AST and creator of www.mrbartonmaths.com (TES Name: mrbartonmaths)

A resource which promises to practice topics including bearings, collecting like terms and ratio is unlikely to initially spark the interest of your average Year 9 class. However when presented as a crime that they have to solve, involving suspects such as Russell Brand, Cheryl Cole, and the suspicious looking Justin Beiber, they might just be a bit more receptive.

This collection of CSI resources are well thought-out and beautifully designed, and would go down a storm with the students. Maybe get them working in small groups, encourage them to carry out the tasks systematically and logically, and then present their findings to the class. Better still, once the students have finished, can they produce their own CSI activity? A rich, rewarding and fun activity for all involved.

Laura Rees Hughes is the creator of these resources, and has written a few words about them:

“When I was younger I desperately wanted to be a criminologist (after watching far too many episodes of CSI) and that is likely to be what inspired these resources. These can be used as a revision lesson or as an informal assessment. If you can get hold of some ‘crime scene’ tape to put across your door it will really help the students to get in character! Get students to work in groups (I find pairs or threes works well) to analyse the evidence and then ask them to present their verdict either written down or verbally. This activity provides you with a lot of insight into their understanding and whether they can apply and communicate their learning in a new context. This also goes down a treat on open evenings, get all the staff to dress up as a suspect and make a real event out of it”

Enjoy these fantastic resources, and please also take a moment to visit Laura’s Maths Blog as it is excellent!
