Special Education Teacher - Learning Development (fixed-term position)

Applications are now sought for the part-time (0.4 FTE) fixed-term position of Learning Development Teacher for 2014 (12 month contract), at our Donvale Campus.


Reporting to the Learning Development Coordinator and the Head of Learning Development, the key functions of this role is to:

  • support students with special needs
  • liaise with classroom teachers
  • implement school policies and procedures in the area of Learning Development


The Learning Development teacher will be a constructive team member, ensuring that appropriate programs are developed for students requiring special needs support and that testing procedures and other means of student assessment are consistent. The role requires Learning Development teachers to case manage students who receive support and intervention by developing a management plan in collaboration with classroom/subject teachers.


Learning Development teachers work with parents/guardians to support special needs students and liaise with Integration Aides/Tutors, directing them in their support of students in line with a student management plan and are required to undertake classroom teaching duties as directed by the Head of Learning Development.




  • Be supportive of the Learning Development Mission Statement.
  • Provide a positive atmosphere that will motivate students for future achievement and foster their sense of individual worth.
  • Test and diagnose learning difficulties using a range of valid instruments, both diagnostic and standardised.
  • Identify students who may qualify for funding under Disabilities provision and complete ISV funding applications for students who qualify for funding.
  • Facilitate referral of students to specialists or agencies outside the School, according to need, and maintain liaison with all professionals concerned with the students’ needs.
  • Be responsible for gathering pertinent information about students’ special needs, including achievement and diagnostic testing, as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records of assessments, teaching programs, meetings and reports.
  • Maintain up to date files on students with special needs.
  • Attend Learning Development team meetings.
  • Attend year level planning sessions with classroom teachers and any other school section meetings as required.
  • Plan appropriate intervention, support or extension programs.
  • Modifying curricula and assessment to allow participation of students in regular class activities.


Provide support for classroom/subject teachers by:


Disseminating information about students’ special needs and learning styles on a regular and ongoing basis


Provide support for students by:


  • Teaching skills and strategies to overcome, circumvent or lessen the particular difficulties experienced by students with special needs,
  • Develop, in consultation with classroom/subject teachers, Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for students with special needs.


Knowledge & Skills


  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Training and experience in the delivery of the Extending Mathematical Understanding (EMU) program is desirable
