Information Texts, a TESiboard Non-Fiction Collection

‘Information Texts’ are reference-type books which contain information and facts about a particular subject. They are non-chronological and often include features such as contents and index pages to help find relevant information quickly. It is important for pupils to learn to ‘read for information’ efficiently, by finding out the facts they need from reference texts. Non-fiction activities such as those below can easily support cross-curricular work, e.g. ‘Toys’ fits the popular KS1 History topic, ‘Toys from the Past’.

TESiboard interactive non-fiction books each have two versions for differentiation:

  • the Listen and Read books have simpler text and full sound support for younger or emerging readers;
  • the Read Alone books have more detailed text and minimal sound support.

Links in the text navigate to other pages containing related items. On each page’s image, there are pop-ups of various features with definitions.

Two additional resource types present the same information in different formats, providing alternative organisational structures to practise different research methods and providing different models for pupils to present their own writing:

  • The Mock Website allows pupils to learn to search for information safely, in a carefully-written and closed environment. THESE ARE NOT REAL WEBSITES SO DON’T EXPECT FULL WEB FUNCTIONALITY. Pupils can use the links to navigate around and find key items of information or enter their own search criteria.
  • The Glossary presents the information for each subject in an alphabetical list format.

A further two interactive activities also support ICT objectives and are related to data handling and classification. They allow the pupils to focus on key similarities and differences and give a purpose for reading:

  • Using the Index Cards, pupils read the text in order to find key items of information to fill out the card categories. They then sort the cards, using their own or the given criteria.
  • The Decision Tree activity asks pupils to sort things by creating a branching database using their own ‘yes/no’ questions.

Finally, the Label and Caption Template allows pupils to create colourful and informative illustrated labels and captions for a display or class book.

Also available to support each topic are editable image documents, in a Word format, to print out for a variety of writing tasks.
