About Ark Burlington Danes Academy
Burlington Danes Academy opened as the successor to Burlington Danes School in September 2006. It is a 6 form entry secondary school for 11-18 year olds. It continues the predecessor school’s long history as a Church of England School and its commitment to ‘achieving though belief’.
In 2011 75% of students achieved 5 or more A*-C GCSE grades including English and mathematics, approximately 20 percentage points above the national average. Meanwhile our first sixth form cohort gained places at some of Britain's top universities such as Bristol, Durham and Kings College London. This followed an impressive set of exam results, with 68% of all A Level grades being A-C. These results make us one of the most successful academies in England. Through the hard work of students, staff and parents we strive to improve further in the future.
Our mission, put simply, is about what we desire for each and every student - To prepare students for university and/or a career of their choice. We are committed to delivering an outstanding education within an outstanding environment where each child, individually, is able to achieve the highest possible academic outcomes. This sense of scholarship underpins all that we do. As we are a Christian community, Burlington Danes ensures each student feels valued, unique and precious as a child of God, sensitive to the needs of others and of them self. Students’ personal growth and learning are the reasons for the academy’s existence: we want our students to be spiritual individuals. Staff ensure that students are engaged in something enjoyable, worthwhile and meaningful at all times. And what we are doing is working, in 2015 we have had students from some of the poorest parts of London go on to Harvard and Oxbridge.
Our success would not have been possible without great teachers, which is why we offer the very best training for all our staff. We provide regular coaching sessions and have an open-door policy for teachers so that peers can share learning and best practice. Our training doesn’t stop once you reach a certain level or learn a certain skill – we’ll support you throughout your whole career, from starting out as a trainee to running your own school.
In line with our ‘comprehensive grammar school’ model we offer a traditional academic curriculum built around the core disciplines of English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Languages. We believe that students perform best when working with peers of a similar ability, and as such our classed are streamed, with frequent opportunities for scholars to change classes according to the progress they are making. Our performing arts specialism means state of the art facilities for music, dance and drama and regular showpiece events, such as our winter concert and spring musical. Following a full inspection on 21-22 November 2013, Burlington Danes Academy was judged outstanding in all four categories. The achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management all received the highest grading based on the new Ofsted criteria, introduced in September 2013.
The school also won ‘Academy of the Year’ in the Education Investor Awards 2011.
