About Blenheim High School

Blenheim has been under new leadership since April 2017. The school became Surrey’s most improved secondary school in the 2017-18 academic year, was categorised as ‘good’ in all areas in May 2019 and attained its best GCSE results in the summer of 2019. In the summer of 2020, 5% of departing sixth form students secured places at Oxbridge. In January 2021 Blenheim was confirmed as Surrey’s most improved school for the number of first preference Year 7 applications received for September 2021, an increase of 26%. A number of comprehensive measures have been put in place that have improved the consistency of teaching, the quality of assessments and the impact of feedback, so that all students now make good or better progress. At the heart of the school’s recent successes has been the comprehensive and consistent implementation of formative assessment across the curriculum.

Blenheim’s ethos revolves around a growth mind-set where all members of our community are actively encouraged to develop the characteristics of hard work, resilience, innovation and improvement. These characteristics are crucial for many reasons, but not least because the reformed National Curriculum, GCSE and A level examinations are more challenging than ever. Growth mindset also significantly informs the ten Blenheim behaviours which are equally accessible to all students irrespective of background, circumstance or ability. They are behaviours that give Blenheim students the ‘edge’ when they move into the workplace or higher education.

The 2020-2021 academic year at Blenheim has two primary objectives. Firstly, to ensure that fresh teaching practices are embedded consistently across the curriculum. Secondly, that Blenheim continues to be a forward thinking, innovative academy that constantly seeks to improve in all areas.

As a community we strive to ensure that Blenheim students are afforded every opportunity to reach their potential academically. Outside of the classroom, a range of sporting, musical, artistic, dramatic, STEM and other extra-curricular activities ensure that students continue to benefit from rich experiences that help them to develop holistically. The recently launched High Performers’ programme is a key component of this.

Blenheim sets high standards in terms of uniform with several ‘non-negotiables’ and there are strict expectations regarding behaviour and conduct, both in and out of the classroom. Students can be given up to 1 hour detention on any given day without 24 hours’ notice. Ofsted described Blenheim as ‘calm, orderly and purposeful’ and our students as ‘respectful, kind and courteous’, which is what those of us who work at Blenheim see every day.

As we prepare our students to take up their place in society we actively encourage them to become independent learners. Part of this process involves the integration of iPads across the curriculum; 98% of students own one. Technological evolution is inevitable and we believe this approach is key to ensuring that our students develop attributes that will allow them to adapt in a rapidly changing world. The iPad complements daily teaching and allows students to easily access a multitude of interactive and innovative resources both in and away from school.

Blenheim converted to Academy Status in March 2012 and we have developed many community and primary school links. We are a well–resourced school and are fortunate to have outstanding facilities including our own grounds, grass football and rugby pitches and an artificial pitch. We are not part of a Multi Academy Trust, although we continue to investigate this. However, with a significant capital reserve, from which we have complete autonomy to invest, we are genuinely in charge of our own destiny. Together with a very supportive governing body this has meant we have been able to develop quickly and invest significantly in several areas, not least in the appointment of high-quality teachers and site infrastructure. Our buildings are modern and last summer received an internal £350,000 face lift. Visitors comment on the calm, purposeful learning environment that pervades.

I hope Blenheim’s journey of continuous improvement encourages you to complete an application.
