About Charter Academy
Charter Academy opened in September 2009, replacing St Luke’s C of E School. Charter Academy’s ambition is to offer its students outstanding academic opportunities. Charter Academy is a mixed, non-selective school, offering places to 11 to 18 year olds.
Aims, Vision and Values
Our vision is that all our students achieve their full potential. Our target is that 80% of our students will achieve 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English and Maths. We are committed to delivering an outstanding education within an outstanding environment where each child is able to achieve the highest possible academic outcomes. We want our students to progress to university, or a career of their choice and to lead happy, purposeful lives.
Every day, students are engaged in enjoyable, worthwhile and meaningful activities at all times. We know we are doing our job if our students have a sense of pride in themselves and in their Academy and we follow our motto of ‘Work Hard, Be Nice, No Excuses!’
We mean this, we follow it and we refer to it every day because we believe in it. Every student matters. Every student can achieve. Every lesson counts. We make no excuses and we expect none, from students or staff. Everyone, no matter what their role in the academy is expected to follow this and believe in it. We strongly believe in providing a first class education and we are proud of our students.
We work alongside the Church of England due to our historic links with them but we welcome all students of other faiths or of none.
Our academy offers a traditional academic curriculum built around the core disciplines of English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Languages. We offer the arts and have a number of subjects for students to develop their talents. Owing to our belief that students work best in groups of similar ability, classes are streamed. However, movement between classes is fluid so students can change up or down according to the progress they are making.
Assessment plays a key role at Charter. All students are assessed every half term and these assessments give students advice on how to improve their work, while also allowing students and staff to measure progress against National standards.
Charter Academy specialises in Mathematics and Performing Arts.
For many years mathematics has been our highest performing GCSE subject. We regularly take part in mathematics master classes and Charter students frequently excel in national Maths Challenge competitions. We focus on enabling students to recognise and understand the practical applications of mathematics and to reap the benefits of confident numeracy in the real world.
Our performing arts specialism offers students the chance to develop their talents in music, dance and drama. Results in these subjects are frquently 100% A*-C. We stage an annual production at a local theatre and have regular smaller in house concerts. We take part in the ARK wide musical events, such as One Voice and the massed choir/instrumental performances. We cherish our strong relationship with local businesses and groups, such as The Kings Theatre, The Theatre Royal, Express FM radio station, The Old Blacksmiths Recording Studio and the young people's charity, Music Fusion. We are proud that we are involved annually with the Portsmouth Schools Festival, The Shakespeare Schools Festival, The Pyramid Project with a number of local primaries and Evensong at the Cathedral. We are very pleased to offer free music tuition on almost all instruments and we employ a range of talented music teachers.
Charter Academy was inspected by Ofsted in May 2012 and was graded as "good". Read the full report here.

For the students we teach, the home lives they have, we are literally changing the opportunities that are open to them. I think it’s much more fulfilling to work here, it really moves you on as a teacher. We do whatever’s right for the student.- Acting Vice Principal
