About Cheam High School

Why Cheam?

Looking to develop your career in an outstanding school, with supportive colleagues and fantastic students in a great area? Read on to find out why Cheam High School is the school for you…

About Our School

Cheam High School is an 11 - 19 co-educational comprehensive academy with around 2000 students including 500 Sixth Formers. It has a strong reputation in the locality and is heavily oversubscribed with approximately 1400 applicants for 300 places each year. The school converted to an academy in 2011 and is part of the Cheam Academies Network (CAN) Trust.

The school has been judged as “outstanding” by Ofsted in all areas (2015) following “outstanding” judgements in 2010 and 2007. This grade has resulted from the high quality of provision offered across a range of areas. These strengths include:

• Curriculum offered with its broad choice and focus on students' interests and aspirations

• Quality of teaching and support for learning

• Excellent facilities

• Pastoral Care

• Personal and Social Development of students

• Leadership and management within the school

The school also received an “outstanding” judgement for the Mathematics subject inspection carried out in February 2012.

We are very proud of our school and the children and young adults that study here. Our students are excellent ambassadors for the school.  They develop into confident and articulate young adults who are committed to preparing for their future career and study choices.  Examination results show their excellent progress (Summer 2016: 74% 5+ A*-C at GCSE, 63% graded B or higher at A level and vocational level 3).  We have a high number of students who choose to stay on in the sixth form whilst others secure appropriate courses or apprenticeships with a vocational focus.  At post 16, approximately 200 students progress to university each year.

Our staff are dedicated to providing students with excellent support.  This relates to academic progress as well as extracurricular experiences and pastoral care.  Our staff are well qualified and the school supports them to share best practice so that our standard of teaching and support is both high quality and also continually developing.

Significant investment has been made in recent years in our excellent facilities including:

• Whole school ICT network with interactive whiteboards in every classroom; five specialist ICT rooms plus 30 further cross-curricular ICT bases for whole class use by other subject areas

• All-weather surface pitch for football, rugby etc. Dance studio. Fitness gym for student and staff use

• Dedicated Post-16 centre

• New/extended buildings housing Performing Arts, Science, Technology, Languages, Maths and Art

Outside of the classroom, there is a staffroom social committee which organises various events as well as regular Friday evening sporting sessions for those with energy!

Centre of Excellence

Cheam High School is recognised as a centre of excellence for teaching and learning. Our aim is the pursuit of excellence for all. We strive for the development of individual potential in a stimulating and inspiring school that is at the heart of the local community.

Cheam High School aims to create a welcoming and exciting learning environment where we:

• Provide a rich, diverse and challenging education through excellent and innovative teaching and learning.

• Celebrate success, promote a "can do" attitude and inspire each to achieve their best.

• Support personal development, social responsibility and a sense of self-worth.

• Develop the attitudes and skills that support a healthy and fulfilled life together with the confidence for a lifetime of learning.

• Work as partners in learning with students, parents/carers and the community.

• Provide a safe, supportive and well-ordered environment where students and staff are happy and confident as they aspire to achieve.

Staff development

Cheam High School has a talented and dedicated staff of around 130 teaching and 130 support staff. Both support and teaching staff show pride and commitment to their role.  Our students benefit from their professionalism and their work in supporting students to achieve their best. Each year, we ask for feedback from staff on various aspects of the work of the school. 100% of staff in September 2016 agreed that they are proud to be a member of staff at Cheam High School.

Cheam High School has an excellent staff development programme with a wealth of experienced staff working with teachers and support staff.  The focus is very much to continually strive for outstanding outcomes for students.

Staff are committed to their own development and many take part in helping others to progress.  Staff attendance at training sessions is high and evaluations are very positive for all internal training that we offer.  We run Training and Development fortnights for all staff half termly with training sessions taking place after school.

There are various training routes for staff to follow including:

• New Staff and NQT Induction Programme

• Year 2 Teachers’ Programme (Y2S – Year 2 Success)

• IQEA (Improving the Quality of Education for All)

• Middle Leaders' Programme

• Focus groups and forums eg MAGT, BTEC and Sixth Form Teaching and Learning forums

• Feedback and Marking Excellence (FAME)

In addition, support staff training and special interest training sessions are held throughout the year (eg Mindfulness, ASD training). Staff may also attend specialist external training as part of their individual professional development or to support student outcomes and school or subject specific priorities. Many staff take part in regular subject specific training and staff in specialist roles may attend external training courses run by specialists in areas such as pastoral care, First Aid, mental health and wellbeing, MAGT and Challenge.

Cheam High School values diversity, and has an Equalities Policy to ensure that everyone within the school community is treated fairly, irrespective of race, gender, disability, sexuality or age.

What people say about us

I grew and developed as a teacher more in one year at Cheam than I did in my previous 5 years of teaching. The opportunities to develop professionally amongst colleagues across the whole school are excellent. Over the last four years my teaching practice has continued to develop and Cheam actively encourages me to grow further.

- Post-threshold Teacher

I have been working at Cheam High School for many years now and have never wanted to leave!  The staff are so supportive of one another, I’ve received excellent opportunities for progression and the work in my department is highly valued

- Subject Leader

Cheam has excellent training facilities to progress you in a teaching career. As a trainee teacher I have been fully supported in my journey to gaining QTS. As well as support in applying for the most suitable course, the in school CPD is first class and delivered by highly trained and very professional colleagues

- SCITT trainee

The students at Cheam are fantastic! I love being a tutor and working with them and getting to know them.

- Tutor

I’ve seen a lot of schools working as an LSA but I knew within an hour that Cheam was where I wanted to train. Fantastic support

- NQT (and former SCITT trainee)

I started at Cheam High School during my PGCE year. During my time here, I've had loads of support and encouragement to continually improve my teaching. The staff are always willing to help, no matter what the query is, and I feel proud to be a part of a school that achieves outstanding results. It's the type of environment that will continue to make me a better teacher.

- 2nd Year Teacher

I really like the range of opportunities there are at Cheam and things that you can get involved in. All of the staff are really supportive and there are lots of systems in place that work effectively. The induction training received upon starting at Cheam was excellent and gave me a great foundation to begin in the classroom
