About Ipswich High School
Ipswich High School is the leading independent school in Suffolk for boys and girls, educating hundreds of pupils aged 3-18 from Pre-Prep through to Sixth Form. The school is the only Diamond Model school in Suffolk and will soon be opening a boarding house in September 2019, allowing a wider market reach.
The school enjoys a high profile across the region and there is considerable demand for places. The catchment area extends across Suffolk, Essex and south Norfolk. In 2011, Ipswich High School achieved top ratings across all categories in the Independent Schools Inspectorate report.
The Diamond Model of teaching is seen as an approach which not only gets the very best from pupils, but also from teaching staff, as they are able to tailor their professional techniques for girls and boys. The model offers the benefits of the single-sex classroom for ‘pre-teen and lower-teen’ students, whilst gaining from the social benefits of a co-educational school. The Diamond Model recognises that, as girls and boys reach their teenage years, they approach their learning in different ways.
The school was founded in 1878 and since 1992 has been situated in the Grade 1 listed Palladian mansion, Woolverstone Hall. The school occupies 84 acres of beautiful parkland in a rural location overlooking the River Orwell, four miles outside the county town of Ipswich. The spacious site has been adapted well to the needs of a forward-looking school with superb facilities including a theatre, ICT suites, swimming pool, Sixth Form Centre, cookery rooms and AstroTurf pitch. The school capitalises on its outstanding natural surroundings: the woodland provides an outdoor learning area for the Pre-Prep and the pond and parkland are often used for scientific research. Lunches are frequently enjoyed outdoors!
At Ipswich High School, pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum from which they enjoy great academic success. In 2018, 98% of our GCSE grades were 9-4 or A*-C with our 9-7 or A*-A pass rate being 64%. Equally, our 2017 A Level results were also impressive, 70% of our grades were A*-C, with a 100% pass rate.
The school is proud of its friendly and caring ethos. Prospective parents and pupils are delighted to find that the school achieves outstanding results in a happy and refreshingly unpressurised environment. Ipswich High School attaches great importance to pastoral care and most full-time teachers are form tutors, who contribute to the extensive programme of extra-curricular activities, including Duke of Edinburgh Gold and World Challenge. The school has a well-deserved reputation for Sport, Drama, Art and Music and offers a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular activities.
