About Island School - ESF
Island School is a co-educational independent international school located in Hong Kong. First established in 1967, the school provides places for around 1200 students aged 11-18, making it larger than the typical British secondary school. Island School primarily specialises in teaching an international curriculum, with English-language being the main teaching language. Younger students at Island School follow the school’s own curriculum, known as the Island Futures Curriculum, intended to provide an international education that encourages creativity and self-motivation. To this end, the curriculum has a wide range of language options for students to take, as well as numerous creative arts and technology subjects. Students go on to study for iGCSE examinations, with sixth form students aged 16 and over pursuing the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Currently Island School is going through a period of redevelopment. The building at Borrett Road which was Island School’s home for nearly 50 years is now being redeveloped, during this time the Island School community is using two temporary campuses in Sha Tin.
Teaching candidates at Island School are typically expected to hold either an undergraduate degree in education or a postgraduate teaching qualification such as a PGCE, as well as hold experience and a strong understanding and experience of the International Baccalaureate programme. Teachers will also be expected to learn to Island School philosophy and adapt to the school’s own curriculum.
The English Schools Foundation (ESF) was established in 1967 and is the largest education foundation in Asia offering a liberal education through the medium of the English language to children of school age. ESF now operates five secondary schools, nine primary schools, two “all-through” Private Independent Schools, five kindergartens and a school for students with special needs. Our 18,000 students are drawn from over 75 nationalities. Increasingly, our schools are also the destination of choice for local families.
