About South Bank University Sixth Form

Overview

South Bank UTC is a school based in Brixton, South London with a focus on technical and practical education specialising in Engineering and Health. The school’s curriculum is created with industry partners including London South Bank University, Skanska, Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Kings College NHS Foundation Trust to ensure students get real world experience and skills to prepare them for future employment. The UTC offers entry into Year 10 and Year 12 for those with a passion for engineering or health and the drive to receive a specialist education alongside traditional GCSEs, A-levels or BTECs.

Specialist Curriculum

South Bank UTC is STEM focused, and its specialisms are design with sponsors to ensure everything they do gives students the best career opportunities. They focus on areas of growth and excel in teaching the skills needs to thrive in jobs, higher education and apprenticeships.

Engineering is about more than just building things: it is creative, practical and aims to make the world a better place for future generations. The engineering curriculum has been designed to ensure students are ready for the future. Alongside traditional GCSEs or A-Levels, students are given a unique opportunity to excel with hands on practical engineering skills. South Bank UTC facilitates the development of personal skills as well as academic and technical knowledge, with projects and trips designed to ensure our students are highly employable.

Healthcare is bigger than you think. There are 350 different NHS careers, ranging from Doctors, Nurses and Midwives to Physios, Educators, Engineers and Technicians, not to mention the many other jobs in the wider health and health tech sectors. Our Health curriculum is designed to set students up with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue their dream career and make a real difference to the world. Students study science-based A Levels or a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, giving them a range of knowledge and skills that can be used in work or further study.

Facilities

South Bank UTC is STEM focused, meaning students have the chance to learn scientific theory alongside practical and hands on work in advanced labs and engineering and  health-specific teaching suites.

Students have access to cutting-edge computing and information technologies to facilitate the study of emerging digital technologies, allowing them to learn, think, design and analyse in a digital environment.

The UTC has world-class facilities for engineering and science, including incredible engineering workshops, digital engineering facilities, brand new science labs and access to virtual reality, 3-D printing, robotics and 360 degree video.

What people say about us

I came to the UTC because I was looking for a different style of a teaching, a more business-like environment. I definitely made the right decision!

- Year 12 student (Jan 2017)

The smaller class sizes here mean that I really get so much more out of my learning.

- Year 10 student (Jan 2017)

South Bank UTC, with purpose-designed laboratories and engineering facilities, offers outstanding learning opportunities for young people in Lambeth and beyond, preparing them for tomorrow's advanced technology world.

- Professor Dave Phoenix OBE, Vice-Chancellor London South Bank University

The best scenario is one where employers get the skills they need for their future workforce and young people get the chance to build great careers. UTCs are an inspiring way to bring these two things together.

- Justine Greening, Secretary of State for Education (visit to a UTC, Oct 2016)
