About The de Ferrers Academy

Following on from 10 years as a specialist Technology College, de Ferrers became an Academy in January 2012. It has grown into a large, split-site, co-educational institution catering for the full range of students from ages 11-18. In 2015 The de Ferrers Academy became a Multi Academy Trust (MAT). In May 2016, three of our partner primary schools converted to academies within the Trust; Horninglow Primary, Lansdowne Infant and Eton Park Junior Academies.

At each of our academies we will strive to inspire through the delivery of a 'World Class' education ensuring that every student achieves their potential. We aspire to be a beacon of excellence within the community we serve where everyone feels valued, included and proud.

Our PRIDE values of Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Excellence are the foundations of our Trust and the community we serve.

The de Ferrers Academy has over 2100 students on roll, including an expanding Sixth Form of 360, and each Year 7 entry since 1985 has been oversubscribed.

The two campuses are less than one kilometre apart and the Academy day is punctuated by breaks, which allow time for travel between sites.

Excellent funding has allowed the Academy to enhance resources and equipment and widely promote the use of new technologies. There are interactive whiteboards and digital projectors in all curriculum areas with over 900 computers and laptops across both sites. Both Dove and Trent campuses are covered by a wireless internet system, with a fast broadband link between them.

From October 2012, the Academy became the first school in Staffordshire to provide all sixth form students with access to a personal 1:1 iPad for use in lessons and at home. Currently, all students in Years 10 to 13 (Trent Campus) have their own iPad, as well as all teaching staff and most support staff. The Academy is an Apple Regional Training Centre.

Employer of Choice

We strive to be your ‘Employer of Choice’ and are totally committed to the ongoing support of our colleagues. We have forged excellent working relationships with various local businesses, who in turn have agreed to offer preferential offers on goods and services. We also have an on-site fitness suite and a range of fitness classes as well as a childcare voucher scheme.

As an Academy, we also offer an extensive range of CPD opportunities, including through the National Forest Teaching School Alliance.

Henry de Ferrers was one of the most important Norman barons who accompanied William the Conqueror to these islands in 1066. He was well rewarded with a number of large estates including one in the Midlands, centered on Tutbury. The family established a Priory in the village in 1089. Later, in 1138 Robert de Ferrers, son of Henry, took the title of Earl of Derby. The Academy badge is based on the heraldic 'vair' pattern, which derives from the covering of a shield with skins of grey squirrels. This coat of arms seems to have been first used by the family sometime during the thirteenth century and today provides us with the symbol we have adopted.
