About The Wren School

The Wren School is a mixed free school and sixth form for pupils aged 11-19. It is located in the suburb of Southcote in Reading, Berkshire. It was opened in September 2015 with 73 pupils. Figures have steadily risen and the school will eventually have 1,176 students at full capacity, amounting to 168 in each Year.

Originally opened with an administration block and five classrooms, The Wren School acquired the site of the former Elvian School on Bath Road which closed down in 2010. The school is operated by the West Reading Education Network (WREN).

Values and Vision

The Wren School's motto is “Nurture, Challenge, Inspire”. The school is committed to inspiring pupils to nurture high aspirations and expectations of themselves, and have respect for other members of both the local and global community.

The school believes the key to developing lifelong skills is in teaching students how, and not what, to think. Its aim is to become an exceptional and encouraging learning environment, providing a broad curriculum for pupils and promoting each individual's transition into becoming an engaged and active member of society.

Promoting a modern, multi-cultural ethos, the school encourages respect and self belief in students through effective, innovative teaching.

The vision of the Wren School is one where the students themselves are its most passionate advocates.

What people say about us

The Wren School is an exciting project with a unique emphasis on a creative as well as themed curriculum. Wren teachers are supported to try new ideas and evaluate existing strategies. Action research groups are strong. Our students are becoming genuinely involved in creating the future curriculum and pastoral systems. This is a fantastic place to be a teacher because it is a fantastic place to be a student.

- Joe Baker, Subject Leader of Science

Since joining The Wren School, I have become part of such a supportive team. There really is a different atmosphere here. I am appreciated for what I do, I am fully supported by a clear staffing structure. We work together to create a school in which students are valued and helped to become mini adults. Our thematic learning means that everything that the students learn makes sense to them. Each term we focus on a few specific 'Wren Skills' which are interwoven into the different subjects, which together are linked under a Theme. We may only be a small school at the moment but we are looking ahead to the future all the time, and I can't wait to meet new members of The Wren Team.

- Jacqui Johannessen Leader of Performing Arts

The three key words of our ethos sum up why I applied to work at The Wren School: nurture, challenge and inspire. Teaching the thematic, skills based curriculum has been an exciting adventure. As a staff, we were all excited to come back to work after the holidays...that really says something!

- Diana Detterick, Subject Leader of English

I started working at The Wren School last September and I have thoroughly enjoyed every day, each one more then the last. I work with an exceptionally committed and enthusiastic team of individuals who clearly all want to work towards a common goal, ensuring the students we teach get the best education possible and are given the greatest opportunity to succeed and thrive in life. Nurture, Challenge and Inspire are the words that The Wren prides itself on and is something I certainly see happening each day. The pupils at The Wren are fun, intelligent and charismatic and present their personalities at every opportunity. I have truly enjoyed every moment and look forward to what the future has in store.

- David Zell, Subject Leader of Physical Education

Working at The Wren is the most enjoyable, satisfying and challenging job I have had. Helping to build a new school and department from scratch is a unique opportunity and one I am continuously excited about. The staff are incredibly supportive of each other and ambitious for the students. The students are fantastic to teach and know they too are part of a special community.

- Jonathan Robinson, Subject Leader of Mathematics

The Wren School is a school which nurtures not only its students but its staff. The collaborative working environment and excellent CPD that is offered ensures that we, as teachers, feel constantly supported both in and out of the classroom.
