About Wymondham High Academy
“The principal, governors and the trust have a shared vision for the school that is based upon high aspirations for its pupils. Leaders are committed to ensuring that pupils continue to make good and improving progress.” - Ofsted 2017
Wymondham High has recently [November 2017] been graded as Good by Ofsted; it’s Sixth Form has been judged as Outstanding. While overall leadership and management has been rated good, the leadership in Sixth Form was described by Ofsted as “tenacious”. We believe very strongly that being outstanding is about the journey, not the destination. We aspire to do things, every day, in an outstanding manner. We work hard to do this; we don't do mediocre.
The Academy is currently the highest performing state school in Norfolk, with a Progress 8 score of +0.55. Our A Level results place us in the Top 3 state schools in Norfolk.
Teaching at Wymondham High is a brilliant experience, but to ensure that colleagues can balance their work and home/family we take wellbeing very seriously. There is a commitment to:
- Ensuring that your car is NOT the last one in the car park
- Enabling colleagues to leave the school site at lunchtime if they have no afternoon commitments
- One paid "Family Day" during the Academic year
- Access to Employee Assistance Programme
- No subject reports
- Reduced duty responsibilities
Over the last 12 months we have been one of the highest attaining high schools in the Eastern region, have improved our Progress 8 score for the last 3 years, have had progress Post-16 which places us in the Top 5% of Sixth Form provision nationally. In January 2018, Tatler magazine rated us as one of their Top 10 state schools in England. We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved. It’s been quite a year. Over the next 12 months we will be undergoing a £4 million development to build a new library [yes, a huge NEW library!], drama studios, canteen and reception. If last year was busy, next year will be magnificent.
We have exceeded our Pupil Admission Number for the past 3 years, we currently have 1579 pupils on roll, with 276 in the Sixth Form. Pupil attendance is well above national average, testament to the fact that pupils feel safe and enjoy coming to school. Colleagues also enjoy teaching at Wymondham High Academy (see our quotes page).
Our commitment to the pupils extends well beyond examination performance. Whilst our achievements in core subjects are well above national averages [they should be, we have a high proportion of high prior attaining pupils], we also actively support pupil choices to follow subjects in performing and expressive arts, languages and technology. Well over 60% of our cohort in each year group [from Year 9] study these subjects. All pupils follow a language through to the age of 16. This broad and balanced curriculum is designed around pupil need not the requirements of league tables. We do what is right for the children, not what looks good to others. We actively promote, and provide excellent facilities for, expressive and performing arts.
Pupils’ attainment is well above average. The proportion of pupils who attain strong passes in both English and mathematics, and the subjects that form the English Baccalaureate, is high and rose further in 2017.” - Ofsted 2017
Performance Post-16 has been outstanding for the past 3 years. Our Value Added is +0.17 [Oxford Analytics] and we are currently an ALPS 2. We achieve this through strong leadership and a meticulous approach to data analysis. Ofsted recognised this last year.
“The sixth form is outstanding. Students’ attainment is consistently high and they make progress that is well above average. Study programmes are rich and the proportions of students who leave the sixth form to attend university are high.” - Ofsted 2017
The Academy has excellent facilities and is a caring community of people with high standards and expectations. It can offer:
- Weekly whole-staff CPD sessions [within the school day]
- A strong focus on staff wellbeing
- Excellent career support and progression
- Brilliant pupils
- An outstanding Sixth-Form
Wymondham High Academy is the first school I’ve worked in and I have been made to feel so welcome and supported from day 1. I really do enjoy working here and watching our students thrive; they are a great bunch of individuals and I cannot wait to continue to watch them grow and become young adults. My job role can become stressful, however with the great support I receive from my team and line manager it makes everything we do so worth it”.- Georgia, Inclusion Support Officer
As a senior leader at the school, I can honestly say that it has been a privilege to work with such wonderful, talented and individual students. I have been very welcomed by staff and students and it is clear to see that the stakeholders in the school are reflective and are open to improving the way that we do things. The Principal is committed to providing only the best experiences for our students and is insistent on the very highest expectations for staff and students alike. The focus at Wymondham is not purely academic, instead it provides our students with enriching experiences and opportunities to open their eyes to the world outside of the town and develop them into the happy and successful people they want to be. With this approach, Wymondham High has felt more like the community that it really is, rather than just the name at the front gate".- Chanel, Senior Leader
“As a music teacher at Wymondham High Academy Trust, the most rewarding aspect of the job is seeing students discover a passion for music at an early age. The Academy supports the arts, and the music department has a great range of modern facilities that allow the students to develop their passion in an exciting and educational way. The music industry is greatly changing and expanding, and being able to teach with modern iMac computers and a fully equipped recording studio allows me to demonstrate the many paths available to the modern musician. The Academy hosts many popular evening events which provide an excellent platform for performance activities, and as a teacher this allows me to offer students the opportunity to work towards performance pieces on a regular basis. I am well supported by my department head and enjoy working in a creative and busy music department.”- Flynn, Teacher of Music
“My time at Wymondham High Academy has been amazing from start to finish I was welcomed in as an instructor and was placed through my Assessment only route teacher training and a host of very useful courses, which thanks to the outstanding help I received from numerous people in the Academy I passed with flying colours. Everyone at Wymondham High Academy is friendly and supportive and it is an outstanding school; one of the best I have worked in. Wymondham High Academy has a great set of students all willing to work extremely hard and are all inspired by a range of fabulous teachers. The school is a great place to spend your working days and each and every day there are new challenges and experiences presented which makes me realise the reason I became a teacher and why it was a superb career choice to be at Wymondham High Academy.”- Josh, Teacher of Food and Nutrition
Working at Wymondham High Academy has allowed me to expand my skills within my teaching practice and develop my subject knowledge through exciting projects with hard-working students. I enjoy working in such an inspirational department supported by an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and creative team.- Clare, Teacher of Art
