The Academy

Nunthorpe Academy is a very popular co-educational 11-19 comprehensive converter Academy with approximately 1550 students on roll - judged to be GOOD – by OFSTED 

Background:

The Bridge Alternative Education Provision - ‘The Bridge'  is a specialist area of the academy for pupils who have specific SEMH and behavioural requirements.  This provision  allows them to continue to access the school curriculum with support from a more bespoke environment.  Core skills such as behaviour management, anger control, respect basics, self-esteem and body image are covered, as well as supporting English, Maths and Science fundamentals being taught as tailored courses specific to individual student needs.  

Core purpose:

The core purpose of the Alternative Provision Mentor is to provide the day to day running of the alternative provision facility to support pupils with their engagement, attitudes to learning, as well as their social, emotional and overall welfare needs.   In short- supporting to engage some of our most vulnerable students in their successful journey at Nunthorpe Academy by maximising students’ engagement, raising their aspirations and achievement and reinforcing and building upon our ethos (Ready, Respectful, Safe) in which all students feel valued. 

Duties will include:  

  • Manage students who have been allocated a place within the academy’s internal Alternative Provision for behaviour day by day and session by session.
  • Promote and ensure high levels of attendance, positive behaviour and engagement in learning for all students who attend the academy’s internal Alternative Provision to ensure consistent progress is made.
  • To liaise directly with all members of the inclusion team and report directly to the AVP Inclusion.
  • To attend weekly inclusion meetings and provide reports and updates on The Bridge/AP students.
  • To work closely with parents/carers and students to improve levels of behaviour and engagement in learning.
  • To collate information on students and work with inclusion team colleagues to identify improvement strategies that can be implemented.
  • To work with parents/carers and other agencies in improving their child’s behaviour and engagement by coordinating parental support and intervention where appropriate.
  • To ensure the provision consistently embeds the Nunthorpe Academy culture of Ready, Respectful. This will be by positive role modelling as well as playing a full part in Academy life to support its vision and values.
  • To engage in whole Academy processes to select the correct students for interventions- both short and long term and work alongside the AVP Inclusion for specific student plans.
  • To ensure all intervention and behaviour modification sessions are planned, delivered and reviewed, evidencing that impact is monitored using quantitative and qualitative data and that positive progress is being made.
  • To ensure student voice is regularly collated and used to inform decision making.
  • To regularly communicate with the pastoral team to ensure continuity and consistency of support for the student and effective sharing of information. This should include for those pupils currently engaging with the provision, those pupils who have transitioned fully back to main school, and those pupils who may potentially benefit from time within the provision.

This is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities and some additional aspects associated with a pastoral role may be undertake based on the skill set of the successful applicant.   

Training will be provided for all aspects of the role you are expected to undertake. If you are interested in gaining pastoral experience in this busy, but rewarding role within Nunthorpe Academy. 

The Candidate:

We require an energetic, inspirational and talented person with a passion for the education of students across the whole 11 – 19 age and ability range. We offer an exciting opportunity to enhance an already highly motivated team, characterised by a very ambitious drive for excellence centred on our School’s vision “to be outstanding in every respect.”

You must possess: GCSE (or equivalent) grade B in Mathematics and English, being a minimum qualification requirement for this post.  In addition, you must possess strong IT skills, have excellent communication skills both verbal and written, have the ability to accurately process and analyse data and have a sensitivity and understanding of child protection and safeguarding

The successful candidate must undertake an enhanced DBS check.
