Job overview

Michaela Community School is an exciting and successful free school that opened in September 2014 and is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. The ambition of our vibrant and energetic team is to transform the lives of all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of us are Teach First Ambassadors. Some of us are not. All of us want to change the world.

We have 600 pupils from years 7 to 11. In September 2019, we will open our Sixth Form. There will be a lot of opportunities for promotion, and we invest in the development of our people.

We are looking for an Art teacher with personality, someone who wants to own their classroom and have vibrant and authentic relationships with their pupils. We want teachers who are conscientious, enjoy being with children and love to see pupils’ success. Our tight behaviour systems allow teachers to be themselves, and be as innovative as they like. The Art department is open-minded and driven, and always looking for ways to improve.

At Michaela, staff work together in departments to create shared resources. It makes last-minute planning a thing of the past. Your ideas on curriculum will have impact across your department because everyone shares their resourcing.

At KS3, pupils are taught the traditional techniques of drawing and painting and Art history. Lessons are ‘teacher-led’ as we believe it is the only way pupils can learn the appropriate skills to an expert level. Teachers show pupils exactly how to use each media in-depth step-by-step using the visualizer. There is no ‘guess work’ at Michaela. Pupils get to practice using the same media over and over again until the technique is mastered and perfected.

Pupil outcomes are therefore very high, with our Year 7, 8 and 9 already producing outcomes to a GCSE quality. Our curriculum fosters a real love for art and art history. Pupils are proud of their achievements and are able to understand and properly discuss artwork when visiting the National Gallery, London.

If you love art and know how to teach drawing, do apply!

The Head of Art has written some blogs about teaching Art at Michaela, which you can read here:

You can also read the first impressions of a selection of our teachers here: https://mcsbrent.co.uk/first-impressions/

You are also very welcome to visit the school – and we would recommend it. We are 30 seconds from Wembley Park tube, accessible by both the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines.  Visitors often say seeing the school in action changed their minds on a variety of topics and allowed them to see the school as it really is.

To register your interest, please send a covering letter along with the TES application form.

Suitable candidates will be interviewed promptly upon receipt of application. The closing date will be brought forward in the event that the post is filled.

At Michaela teachers are paid using the teacher inner London pay scales. If you would like to discuss the position with one of our teachers, please email Head of Art, Lizzie, at estiles@mcsbrent.co.uk.

Michaela Community School is an exciting and successful free school that opened in September 2014 in Wembley, and is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. You may have heard of us: our Headmistress, Katharine Birbalsingh, is often in the news saying things that others find controversial but that we think are common sense. In 2023, our Progress 8 at GCSE was 2.37, the highest Progress 8 in the country. Nearly three quarters of our GCSE papers achieved a 7 to 9 grade. We also got 94% grade 5s in English and Maths. Our A level results were equally impressive with three quarters of our A-Level exams graded A* or A, and 75% of students went on to Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, Imperial and LSE.

The ambition of our vibrant and energetic team is to transform the lives of all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of us are Teach First Ambassadors. Some of us are not. All of us want to change the world by showing that a child’s home circumstances don’t have to be a barrier to exceptional success.
