Location:  Kingston upon Thames, London 

Tenure: Permanent,  38 weeks of the year (term-time plus 2 weeks) 

                   (Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm, 37.5 hours per week)

Surbiton High School’s dynamic Art  Department seeks an Art Technician who is passionate about inspiring, encouraging and empowering our pupils in the subject. 


Key Responsibilities:

This is a very varied role, but your areas of involvement include:

  • Keeping the Art studio ordered and tidy
  • Working with the art staff to prepare lessons
  • Stock taking and ordering of materials
  • Assisting with the department budget
  • Ensuring health and safety procedures are adhered to
  • Helping students build armatures or other structures as required
  • Loading and unloading the kiln, firing the kiln (training can be provided)
  • Making canvases for students
  • Occasionally helping teachers in practical lessons, such as printmaking
  • Taking minutes in the department meetings
  • Contributing to the organisation and running of co-curricular and enrichment activities, as well as wider School initiatives where applicable
  • Such other duties as the Principal may reasonably direct

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • A Fine Art background would be useful but not essential
  • Ability to use woodworking tools for making canvases and building armatures
  • Excellent IT skills essential
  • Ability to carry heavy and bulky items
  • Prior experience working within a school environment would be an advantage
  • A good understanding of health and safety issues in a school environment
  • High levels of organisational and self-management skills
  • Self-motivation
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a team
  • Flexibility and openness to change
  • Reliability
  • Understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality
  • Commitment to personal professional development
  • Keenness to develop further in a well-resourced and supportive environment
  • High levels of communication skills in English, both written and spoken, to enable effective communications with pupils and with colleagues
