Job overview

Teacher – Science (ASCEND)

Start Date: September 2022

Salary: TMS + SEN Allowance

Location: Aveley, Essex

Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent

ASCEND is a centre for students who have specific Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties. The centre caters for 30 students ranging from years 7-11 and there is a high ratio of staff to students compared with mainstream schools. The high ratio allows for very small teaching groups of 6 and a percentage of one-to-one sessions where necessary. At ASCEND we believe that in order to create an environment of respect, trust and cooperation we have to work as a team. This must include the staff, students, parents and visitors to the centre. Our aim is to create students who can make a positive contribution to the wider community and are confident about themselves.  It is vital that we empower and support our students to make positive choices while at school and throughout their lives. To create an inclusive, happy, secure and stimulating learning environment, we encourage all members of the ASCEND community to grow in self-esteem, self-governance and develop their potential as human beings.

A fantastic opportunity for an innovative, creative, courageous and resilient practitioner to lead and inspire young minds in a unique special school in an ethnically diverse borough. ASCEND which stands for A Specialist Centre for Education Nurture and Development is part of Ormiston Park Academy. We are rated a Good School by Ofsted. Below are a couple of quotations from our last Ofsted inspection:

“Leaders have skilfully developed curriculum pathways that match pupils’ needs and enable them to make good progress.”

“Pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities are supported very well in the school’s ASCEND centre. They make good progress.”

The successful applicant will lead Science at key stages 3 and 4 and be an outstanding classroom practitioner with the vision to be creative, the passion to motivate, and the subject-knowledge to challenge and inspire. You will be a strong leader, be ambitious for the further development of the department, and be committed to wider ethos of the Ormiston Academy Trust.

Values and vision

Ormiston Park Academy’s work is guided by four fundamental principles: personalisation, globalism, innovation and inclusion.

These principles drive the secondary school to provide an education that is: designed to meet its students’ individual needs (personalisation); aimed at opening its students’ eyes to the world (globalism); always at the forefront of developments in learning (innovation); and designed to serve local families (inclusion).

Ofsted report

“The progress of the small number of students with special educational needs who attend the ASCEND unit is good, as is the care and support that they receive. Most teachers now have high ambitions for those they teach and challenge students to meet them. As a result, achievement is rising, particularly in English and mathematics, and especially for disadvantaged students. Students’ conduct around the academy site is generally positive. Behaviour within lessons is much improved. Levels of temporary exclusion are declining. Students feel safe and secure at the academy.”
