Job Title: Aspiring Teacher / Cover Supervisor 

Grade/Allowance: Scale  Point 18

Responsible To: Vice Principal / Cover Manager and works under the general direction of a class teacher when supervising lessons.

Responsible For: Taking an active part in the life of the Academy.

To supervise whole classes to cover short term absence of teachers and to allow teachers to carry out professional duties and training.

To give instructions for the lesson, as provided by the teacher, and keep pupils on task while maintaining good order.


Principle Accountabilities

It is important to:-

• Promote and support high levels of learning and progress, to support students in achieving to their full potential.

• Promote a positive healthy culture through pastoral care.

• To work in conjunction with the Academy improvement plans.


Key Tasks

Learning and Teaching

• Promote the active involvement of pupils in their learning.

• Coordinate with the SENCO and other staff with relevant experience to match work to students’ needs.

• Support strategies to promote high standards of behaviour.

• Promote and support outstanding attendance in line with the Whole School focus in this area.


Self Development and Working with Others

• Promote and safeguard the safety and welfare of children and young people.

• Contribute to the creation of a positive school ethos in which every individual is treated with dignity and respect.

• Develop skills through meetings, discussions and CPL.

• Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom with the school’s policies and procedures of equal opportunities.

• Engage in relevant professional development including meetings and training as required


Specific Duties:

• Deliver cover of whole school lessons when lead teachers are absent.

• Work to a high standard in implementing agreed policies, priorities and expectations both academically and pastorally.

• Supervise pupils while they are engaged in learning activities and deal with immediate problems and emergencies.

• Provide objective and accurate feedback to the teacher on the conduct of the lesson and the behaviour of pupils.

• Maintain and pass on any appropriate records or completed work as agreed beforehand with the teacher.

• Provide support and assistance to teaching staff in large examinations or test groups.

• To help to ensure the learning environment is outstanding

• Support learning within lessons which may involve leading specific activities.

• Support the delivery of extra-curricular activities

• Participate in Departmental meetings

• To accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility 

• Manage pupils’ behaviour within the ethos and behavioural policies of the school
