We are looking for an experienced Assistant Headteacher to join our fantastic team at Underley Gardens School. As Assistant Headteacher, you will support our Headteacher in school management, delivering our pupils educational needs, maximising children’s achievement, and their ability to develop.


This is a great opportunity for an Assistant Headteacher who is looking for the chance to bring innovation and creativity to inspire learning in an SEN/ASC environment for children with varied and complex needs. Your work will be challenging and rewarding in equal measure and you will be the custodian of our strong safeguarding culture, where pupils are listened to, respected, and involved in as many decisions as possible.


In partnership with our Headteacher, you will deliver clear, authentic leadership to our multidisciplinary team, establishing school aims and objectives, ensuring high levels of quality and compliance and working collaboratively to develop appropriate, individualised programmes of learning for our children.

We are looking for an Assistant Headteacher, with the experience, leadership skills and vision to build incredible futures by empowering vulnerable young people in the UK, to be happy and to make their way in the world.


Educated to degree level or equivalent with Qualified Teacher Status, you will be experienced in an SEN/ASC environment, enjoy leading a team, and be genuinely motivated by helping every child to reach their potential.

The young people who attend Underley Garden all have an EHCP/statement of special educational needs. Underley meets the needs of a range of SEN including Autism, Learning Difficulties, Mental Health & Medical needs and related behavioural difficulties.


For over 16 years Options Autism have provided care and education to children, young people and adults with autism, complex needs and learning difficulties. Underley Garden is a unique setting, providing specialist education and care through the highest levels of expertise. On our most recent Ofsted we were rated 'Outstanding' in all areas.

Our highly personalised approach ensures a more inclusive life for children & young adults, whatever their range of of complex needs: including autism, learning & communication difficulties, and associated problems.

Residential & day places are much sought after: from Primary years at “Holly Trees” through to Secondary & Adult Care. In our specialist environment of understanding and calm, our focus is to make learning opportunities appropriate, meaningful and relevant, with an emphasis on social and communication skills.

Our highly trained, experienced staff are dedicated to unpick each pupil’s specific needs and match them with an integrated blend of educational and therapeutic aims which ensures progress and success.

The onsite therapists – Speech and Language, Occupational, Educational Psychologists and Learning Disability Nurses – regularly visit each class and home to help ensure our therapeutic approach is embedded across every aspect of Underley Garden life.

Our location, on a private estate close to the Lake District, offers personal space to explore & enjoy the beautiful environment as well as wonderful opportunities to join local community activities such as our recent success as winners of Cumbria in Bloom.
