British School of Barcelona:

The British School of Barcelona (BSB) is a great school in a great location. We are an HMC school and were judged by BSO (British Schools Overseas) Inspection, to be outstanding in many areas, including Safeguarding, pupil welfare, pupil progress and outcomes.

BSB is a large, very popular, all-age school for children aged 3 to 18. Our curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum and we offer a wide range of GCSEs, A levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, all alongside a significant enrichment programme.

Nearly 1600 pupils from over 50 nationalities attend the school and over 250 staff work at BSB. We are based in two locations just outside the city of Barcelona – in Castelldefels, and in the cosmopolitan town of Sitges.

Significant investment in the school in recent years has seen the building of a state-of –the art Pre-University Centre (Nexus), a theatre, new science laboratories and 2019 will see the opening of a full-sized AstroTurf sports pitch and sports stadium.

The Location:

The school enjoys a location to the south of Barcelona, one of the most vibrant, culturally-rich cities in the world. Both the Castelldefels (Primary and Secondary) and the Sitges (Primary) campuses are minutes away from beautiful beaches and are excellently connected by public transport.

The Role:

BSB seeks to appoint two energetic and enthusiastic individuals to the position of Assistant Headteacher.  It is anticipated that the key responsibility for each of these posts will be to drive the continuing innovation and improvement of Teaching and Learning across the Secondary School and to oversee and develop the school´s Pastoral Provision, respectively.  The successful applicants will join the Secondary Senior Leadership Team and will also play a key part in helping to develop the school’s future strategy in these and other areas. It is anticipated that this post would suit a teacher with previous management experience who is keen to move on to Deputy Headship in due course.

The success of BSB is due to excellent, well-planned teaching, within an environment where pupils are both cared for and caring. The fact that the school educates pupils from age 3 to 18, if also a real strength. Given the rapid recent expansion of the school, we are looking to make two key appointments: an individual who can drive a genuinely innovative approach to teaching and learning, founded on an appreciation of the latest research and with the ability to develop pupils and staff to their fullest potential and an individual to lead pastoral provision, implementing latest thinking in this area and ensuring student welfare is central to decision making and school strategy.

The precise allocation of responsibilities across the two appointments will be dependent on the individual strengths of the successful candidates. General responsibilities across the two roles are listed below. An ability to speak Spanish will be viewed as an advantage but is not a requirement.

Most importantly, we will look for candidates who thrive on responsibility and who are highly-skilled communicators with the ability to lead a team. The ability to inspire students and staff, and the willingness to support the ambition and values of BSB, will be of key importance. Successful candidates will be self-reliant, resilient and adaptable.

The posts will have a significant teaching allocation and therefore candidates should have a strong academic record, including a good degree in a relevant subject. We will look for evidence of the capacity to contribute to the broader life of BSB and for evidence of passion and enthusiasm for the relevant subject.

Role Specification:

Across the two roles, these will include:

• Report directly to the Head of Secondary School and Pre-U

• Play a key role in the Senior Management Team, attending meetings as appropriate and contributing to the development of whole school strategy.

• Oversee and improve the quality of Teaching and Learning across the entire Secondary school.

• Oversee and improve the quality of the Pastoral programme and provision across the Secondary school.

• To manage a team of academic leaders across the school, leading on the monitoring of standards within the classroom.

• To manage a team of Pastoral leaders across the school, ensuring consistently excellent standards of provision and student welfare.

• To ensure relevant CPD is in place to further improve academic or pastoral provision.

• Carry out any tasks that arise out of being part of the Secondary Senior Management Team or as requested by the Head of Secondary and Pre-U.

Working with Cognita:
