Job overview

This post has no requirement for you to be Catholic or Christian; the appointed person will simply need to be supportive of our values and ethos.

St. Mary’s is looking to complete its senior team  with the appointment additional post of Assistant Headteacher.  This new post will provide additional capacity as we look to create a Multi-Academy Trust with 7 local Catholic Primary schools, hopefully opening on 1st September 2021.  We are also in the final stages of expanding our school from 5FE to 6FE, and for both reasons we are looking for an Assistant Head applicant who can demonstrate a proven ability to lead on either Curriculum, Data or Pastoral matters.  The precise portfolio will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity. Our Surveys show that 96% of staff enjoy their work at St Mary's, 97% agree that leaders do all they can to ensure a motivated and respected staff, 100% of students enjoy their learning and believe that behaviour around the school is good, and 97% of parents would recommend St. Mary’s to other parents. We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.

Added to this, the school is also at an extremely exciting juncture in its future. Demand is high, and owing to intense oversubscription, we will have 6FE in all years on September 2021, plus an exceptional additional form of entry in Year 7. We have also won over £7m in capital bids in the last 3 years and are enjoying brand new cutting edge facilities as a result. The school faces an extremely strong and positive financial future.

Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area. Over the last 4 years, exam results have risen at both GCSE & A Level. The ‘Progress 8’ score for 2018 was +0.61, which puts the school in the top 10% in the country, and this trend continued in 2019 with the results being significantly positive. At A Level the proportion of A*-B Grades as well as students enrolling at elite Russell Group Universities has risen significantly over each of the last 4 years with 2018 breaking all school records.

The precise nature of the job description will be negotiated to suit the successful candidate’s interests and abilities, but will certainly include a range of academic and pastoral responsibilities, as well as deputising for the Headteacher. This can be discussed with the Head in advance of or during the interview process.

Tours of School Site:

We have arranged for two opportunities for tours of the school on Tuesday 23rd March and on Tuesday 13th April, both at 2.05pm. To book into a tour, please contact Claire Boylan (HR) at recruitment@stmarys.net

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants. St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

Closing date: Friday 16th April 2021 10 a.m.

Apply in writing using the forms available on our website www.stmarys.net: Senior Leadership Application Form, Consent to Obtain References Form, Rehabilitation of Offenders Form & Recruitment Monitoring Form. Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
