Assistant Headteacher

Full Time, Permanent Contract

Leadership Spine Range 11 – 15, £57,436 to £62,926 for outer London, depending upon experience

Starting date: 1 September 2021

We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Headteacher to join the leadership team at Waldegrave School following the promotion to Deputy Headship of the current incumbent.  You will have responsibility for leading a key stage and lead on an identified whole school initiative.  You will work closely with the other members of our strong leadership team to help shape and deliver the strategic vision for the school, continuing to build upon the successes of Waldegrave.   You should be a visible leader with a passion for teaching and learning, ambition for the students and the school, and have a proven track record of effective and successful leadership.

Waldegrave is an outstanding and over-subscribed comprehensive school for girls aged 11 to 16, with a successful co-educational sixth form.  We are a school whose aim is that everyone enjoys learning, feels valued and experiences success.  We are a positive, supportive community with an active PTA, engaged student parliament and strong governing body.

We encourage teachers and leaders to work collaboratively, whilst maintaining individual autonomy, to develop the curriculum and school to be the best it can be.  We are a Googleschool and whilst maintaining the rigour of traditional learning we embrace the use of new technology to support this. Utilising this technology is also a key part of how we can work more collaboratively and improve communication as a school, supporting more flexible approaches to working.  Behaviour for learning is strong and underpinned by clear policies and support for staff and students.  Our inclusion and well-being teams are excellent and provide integrated support, care and understanding.

We value our staff and are committed to running a school  in which staff can grow and progress in their careers.  We are a national teaching school and support the delivery of initial teacher education and NPQML/NPQSL programmes. Our values, combined with enthusiasm and hard work, have proved to be successful in terms of our students consistently achieving outstanding results, an Ofsted “outstanding” rating (2018) and a keen student body and alumni who are proud to be Waldegrave students. In 2016 Waldegrave School was awarded ‘Comprehensive School of the Year’ by The Sunday Times and in 2019 achieved accreditation as a World Class School.

The safeguarding of our students is at the core of all that we do. All offers of employment are subject to an Enhanced DBS check; a prohibition from teaching check, where applicable; and appropriate references from your current and previous employer, which maybe corroborated by personal phone calls made to each referee.

Quotes from the 2018 Ofsted Report

  • The quality of teaching is consistently strong across the curriculum.
  • Teachers are thoughtful practitioners, constantly looking at ways to become even better.
  • Leaders, governors and teachers are united in having the highest aspirations for pupils.
  • Students achieve exceptionally well in the sixth form. This is due to consistently effective teaching and excellent opportunities to enhance students’ wider personal development.
  • Middle leaders are very effective at improving the quality of provision and outcomes in their subjects.
  • The exceptional leadership of the headteacher and her senior team ensures excellent standards in all aspects of the school’s work

The inspection team looked at all aspects of the school including: standards of achievement, teaching and learning, the personal development and well-being of students, and leadership and management. All were graded outstanding which put the school in the top 25% of schools in the country.

There is a strong commitment to training and professional development, as well as the work/life balance of all staff. We are a national teaching school and deliver ITT in partnership with local universities.

Based in Twickenham, in the leafy London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, we are fortunate to be set in spacious and attractive grounds over a 14.5 acre site.

The school has received significant recent investment including a new sixth form block, dining room and sports hall, and a refurbished performing arts centre. Departments enjoy well-equipped specialist facilities, good break and lunch areas, as well as collaborative spaces.

We value the diversity of our school community and our curriculum. Staff and students enjoy positive relationships. Students are enthusiastic about learning and have ambition to succeed, as a result behaviour is excellent. This atmosphere allows teachers to have autonomy and be innovative and is one of the main reasons so many staff choose to stay at the school.

Support staff are valued and respected, and work collaboratively with teaching staff. They are integral to our ability to provide a safe, and happy environment in which students can thrive
