The Science Department

The Science Department are committed to constantly evaluating and improving our curriculum offer while ensuring high quality teaching and learning in a calm, stimulating and purposeful environment.

We believe that education should be centred around the students as much as possible. All students have the ability to learn and should be offered a high-quality education that will enable them to reach their aspirations. We advocate for a holistic approach where students curiosity and passion for science is promoted. We have high expectations of our students in terms of behaviour, attitude and effort.

The department has grown and stabilised over the last 3 years into a warm, welcoming and happy team that currently consists of 9 teachers and 2 technicians. Relationships are important and we pride ourselves on supporting one another and have recently moved to co-planning to reduce workload.

The department has teaching laboratories on D floor in the main teaching block and 2 well-resourced prep rooms. We use Lab Logger for all practical requisitions. All staff in the department have a laptop and visualiser and there is also a central Science staff room in the department with a photocopier and kitchen facilities.

The Science Curriculum

The all-through nature of DSLV is pivotal to our curriculum offer.

Our curriculum, which stretches from early years up to a collaborative sixth form, is developed by subject specialists and built around 10 big ideas. These ideas incorporate key threshold points and skills identified within the schemes of learning. These 10 big ideas are:

Forces

Electromagnets

Energy

Waves

Matter

Reactions

Earth and the Universe

Organisms, mind and behaviour

Interdependence

Variation

Teaching of these big ideas uses interleaving so that understanding is consolidated and made robust with the use of detailed curriculum maps that outline the programme of study. We believe in teaching through explicit/direct instruction (Rosenshine and Engelmann) and utilising TLAC 2.0 techniques. We make use of frequent low stake assessments to inform planning as well as cumulative summative assessments.

At GCSE, we offer the AQA Trilogy and Separate Science Qualifications. At A Level, we offer Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science A Levels through our joint Sixth Form with The Parker Academy.

Ofsted report

“Pupils conduct themselves well, both in lessons and around the school site. They have positive attitudes to learning. Leaders who are responsible for safeguarding ensure that pupils are safe, and that those who are potentially vulnerable receive appropriate support. Children in the early years make good progress in their learning due to the effective support that they receive from their teachers. Students in the sixth form achieve well due to the appropriateness of the courses that they study, and the close support that they receive from their teachers and the head of sixth form.”
