Oundle School is one of the country’s leading HMC co-educational boarding and day schools and enjoys a strong reputation for academic excellence supported by outstanding pastoral care.
To start 1st September 2019, on a fixed term contact until 30th June 2020, we are seeking an exceptional Teacher of Biology to develop and inspire our pupils, who is able to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole. In return, the School is committed to helping you develop further as a teacher by giving you access to its generous professional development budget.
Science is one of the core curriculum subjects at Oundle, with Biology, Chemistry and Physics studied by all pupils up to the Fifth Form (Year 11) with GCSE teaching beginning in the Third Form (Year 9). Biology is taught using the OCR A-Level syllabus, but we also offer the challenging Pre-U courses in other Sciences. IGCSE is taught across the Science department with most pupils entered for separate Sciences. In 2018, the Upper Sixth Form returned 41% A/A* or equivalents, and 88% A*/A at KS4.
All Sciences are taught by subject specialists and are amongst the most popular post-GCSE choices. The Science department has an excellent track record in preparing pupils for highly competitive degree courses such as Engineering, Medicine, Physics and Natural Sciences at the top universities in the country.
The Science department is housed in the state-of-the-art SciTec campus, which has recently been extended and developed further to bring about Oundle School’s vision of having a STEM campus for the Sciences, Mathematics, and Design and Technology. The campus, believed to be the first of its kind in English schools, includes a new Mathematics department, Biology and Chemistry project rooms, and a Science Staff workspace, as well as redevelopment of the Design and Technology department. It has excellent resources for practical work, research, as well as housing computer suites.
Oundle School has a strong tradition of teaching through practical and independent project work. The Biology department, which has a staff of eight teachers supported by three technicians, has excellent facilities.
Practical work is central to our teaching. There is a strong project programme within the department where pupils have the opportunity to study areas and learn techniques beyond the syllabus through Biology projects where the pupils are encouraged to submit their work for the AQA Extended Project Qualification. To assist with this, we are fortunate enough to have a fully equipped Molecular Biology project room.
All pupils in the Fourth Form take part in the Biology Challenge; Sixth Form pupils are entered for the Intermediate Challenge and the Biology Olympiad, with some success. The department has had many successful applicants to Oxford and Cambridge to read Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Natural Sciences and Medicine. The department is also responsible for the preparation of pupils for application to Medical School, where every year we have considerable success. This includes interview practice, medical ethics and UKCAT and BMAT preparation.
The Biology department runs biennial expeditions: in 2019 a group of pupils will visit Ecuador and the Galapagos to experience the diverse flora and fauna within the rainforest and marine environments. Previous trips have been to Borneo, The Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Honduras and Madagascar.
