Start date: 28/08/2019
Contract type: Full Time
Salary: Competitive Salary
Contract term: Permanent

For September 2019, we are looking to appoint a committed, energetic and inspiring House Master / Mistress for one of our boys’ houses (Roberts, aged 14 to 18, around 50 full-time boarders and 10 day pupils). Roberts House is named after St John Roberts, a member of the community now at Downside, who was martyred in 1610.

You will have overall responsibility for the House, supported by an Assistant House Master, a Resident Tutor, a team of Tutors, House Parents and the Chaplaincy Team. The House Master/Mistress has a vital role to play in the pupils’ development. They live in family accommodation within the boarding house. This post is full-time and permanent and will have a teaching timetable in line with the responsibilities of the post.  Applicants from all subject disciplines are encouraged to apply and a contribution to the academic and extra-curricular life of the school is essential.

It is essential that the appointed person has a clear understanding of the pastoral care provision required in a boarding environment and will be able to lead and implement this through their dedication and support from the team. Flexibility, resilience and commitment to a residential boarding post are key attributes needed.

In return, you can expect a generous salary and benefits package. Working at Downside is a truly rewarding experience. In keeping with our Benedictine ethos, Downside is a welcoming, caring community where each person is considered to be a valued member. Pupils are highly motivated, keen to learn and respectful of staff and their peers.

Downside is an independent, Catholic, Benedictine co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18, and one of England’s oldest and most distinguished Catholic schools.  The school is situated at the foot of the Mendip Hills, twelve miles south of the city of Bath.

Downside School is known for its strength in pastoral care and was referred to as “Best for Well-being” (UK) in The Week Magazine, Winter 2015/16 which also cited the following “the eight aspects of a Benedictine education … are a blueprint for pastoral care”.

Our recent ISI report speaks extremely positively of the School and clearly highlights that the well-being of pupils is our top priority.
