Job overview

In this exciting role, The Bursar, will report directly to our Headmaster. The role also takes its place on the College’s Senior Leadership Team. The successful candidate will also be clerk to our Governing Body.

Although candidates should have a genuine interest in education and in particular - independent schools - we encourage applications from those with a background in other sectors.

Candidates should hold an innovative and professional attitude and use communication skills to develop good working relationships with all employees as well as with external contractors and suppliers.

The successful candidate will enjoy an autonomous role while working as part of a collaborative team. The position provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced and innovative person who will oversee all financial matters, assume responsibility for the operational efficiency of the College through the leadership of the supporting functions including finance, estates, HR and IT and take the lead on strategy setting for the College’s future.

The role also takes on the responsibility for Ashville’s trading arm which encompasses the Sports Centre, lettings programme and Ashville education - which includes the Summer School.

Ashville College is a co-educational, independent school for day and boarding pupils aged 2–18. The college, set in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, comprises a pre-school, prep school and senior school with pupil numbers totaling around 870, 170 of whom are in the sixth form and 100 are boarders. The school is a registered charity, administered by Ashville College Trustees.

Ashville College was founded in 1877 as a boarding school for boys by the United Methodist Free Church. Expansion over the decades culminated in a merger with Elmfield College, Harrogate, in the 1930s, by which time Ashville was the largest private school in the north of England.   The most significant development came in 1982 when the school become co-educational.
