We are facing the biggest environmental challenge our world has ever experienced.  The Scottish, UK and many other Governments have a political target of zero carbon emissions by 2050.  At Dollar Academy it is our intention to do more than our ‘bit’ in helping to deliver that target.  It is our vision to become a leader in the race to Net Zero and beyond – both as an educator, with the ability to influence others, and also by the transparent demonstration of our own carbon emission reductions.


In order to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions, we are looking to recruit a Carbon Reduction and Sustainability Officer.  The successful candidate appointed to this brand new and exciting role within the Academy will work with the Bursar, Senior Staff Group, Sustainability Committee and external consultants.


About Us

Dollar Academy is an independent, coeducational school founded in 1818, with a roll of some 1,300 pupils, of whom around 90 are boarders.  Academic standards are high and the school has a reputation for excellence in all fields. The Academy is situated in about 50 acres of grounds, amidst delightful scenery, in the small town of Dollar at the foot of the Ochil Hills, twelve miles east of Stirling, and provides a most attractive working environment.


The Role

The Carbon Reduction and Sustainability Officer’s key responsibilities include:

  • Collecting and assimilating all available data, and estimating other data to establish a baseline of the current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of Dollar Academy
  • Analysing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions breakdown to determine boundaries of Dollar Academy Net Zero aims and measurement
  • Developing and submitting a plan for GHG reductions with a proposed Net Zero date, prioritised activities and strategies, an implementation plan, resource requirements, options for leveraging policy subsidies and government support, and interim targets
  • Mapping, monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of all GHG reduction strategies
  • Galvanising buy-in throughout the Academy through communication, events, training etc
  • Helping develop staff and students to be exponents of climate change awareness and GHG reductions
  • Offering support to the Sustainability Committee, to include the drafting of reports, presentations and proposals
  • Organising and assisting any relevant external consultants appointed by the Governors
  • Helping deliver Net Zero strategy. Likely areas of focus include, but are not limited to the following areas:
    • Energy use
    • Reduction of pollution, waste and recycling
    • Building and facility design
    • Environmental improvement of the campus
    • Transportation of students and staff
    • Food and consumables procurement
    • General education of others on sustainability

The Candidate

Applicants should hold a related university degree or postgraduate qualification.  Experience of recent and related project management reporting is preferred; however, this post may also suit a recent graduate.

You should have a clear passion for this topic with a broad and current understanding of sustainability practices and regulations.  Previous experience of relevant data collection and evaluation techniques also required.

In addition, you must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have a flair for solving problems creatively.
