Job overview

We are looking for a positive, enthusiastic trainee Careers Advisor to join our growing school. This role would suit someone who thrives on a proactive approach as it involves direct liaison with students, colleagues across the school, families, and external organisations. Getting the right person to work with our students is our absolute priority and we are happy to support a candidate with potential through a QCF level 6 Career Guidance and Development qualification. The school is committed to providing a high quality careers provision in line with the Gatsby benchmarks.

Your role will require you to work under your own initiative, supported by a link member of the senior team, providing high-quality impartial advice to students. Our students’ destinations at 18 range from highly competitive university courses and degree level apprenticeships to direct employment or further training. At 16, many students choose to stay in our Sixth Form while others are supported in their applications to other organisations or Level 2/3 apprenticeships. All of our students benefit from a long-term approach to recognising their own skills and building capacity for the future. Your role will also involve coordinating Work Experience, currently offered to all of our Year 10 students, as they take their first steps in exploring a workplace environment.

This linked job description is for this role during the training period of 18-24 months. We would expect a commitment of at least a further two years on completion and the job profile will be adjusted at this point to reflect qualified status. Candidates who already hold a Level 6 qualification should get in touch via the details below for a further discussion.

The successful candidate will have excellent administrative skills, and IT skills, and be highly efficient and organised. They will be able to deal sensitively with a variety of situations with external agencies, employers, staff, students and parents. A calm, flexible approach and highly accurate written communication are essential.

The job description is generic but there will be every opportunity as part of the interview process to discuss this in detail.

King Edward VI School is an 11-18 school serving the community of Lichfield and surrounding rural areas. We want everyone in school to develop to their full potential; it is our job to ensure that students leave us as confident, life-long learners who have a strong sense of responsibility for themselves and for others. We are a learning community with a positive, supportive and friendly environment where we take the time to get to know our students so we can support their learning and their personal development. We seek to develop a strong partnership between students, parents and the school to enable this to take place.

Our overriding aim is to provide the highest quality education for all students. We believe that every individual has potential: our commitment is to help each young person to make the most of their abilities. The majority of our students seek to continue their education with us in our Sixth Form until they are 18 and our results are consistently amongst the best in Staffordshire. Our aim is to ensure that students leave us with the knowledge, skills, confidence and love of learning that is needed to successfully complete their education and throughout their life.

‘It was noted that there is a school culture which is underpinned by high expectations and a climate of mutual respect. As a result, pupils are keen to learn and work hard’. Ofsted October 2017

Learning reaches far beyond the classroom; we seek to provide an all-round education. Extra-curricular activities are offered in a wide range of areas and staff are encouraged to share their own areas of interest with the students. There is also an extensive range of educational visits and events both locally and further afield. Our students are able to explore their potential and develop new skills; we encourage all students and staff to get involved with the wider life of the school and its community.

The school’s strongest assets are its staff and students. If you are considering joining us then please consider coming for an informal visit and see for yourself.

We are committed to professional development and encourage a collaborative approach to school improvement.
