Job overview
Education is not only a way for individuals to achieve their potential, it’s also a way to restore pride in their community. Can you inspire and lead the Co-op Academies Trust through a rapid expansion, guided by a truly co-operative approach?
The Trust is sponsored by the Co-op, the UK’s largest, mutually-owned business, known and respected for ethical leadership and community engagement. The first Co-op Food store opened in Rochdale in 1844 and it wasn’t long before it had a school room and reading room above the shop.
Today, the Trust works across the North of England, including in some of the most challenging communities, because that’s where we can make the biggest difference. We’ve embarked on a rapid expansion, it’s our ambition to sponsor 40 academies in the coming years. As our new CEO, you’ll guide us through this exciting time and improve the future for 40,000 young people. So you will need to provide strategic leadership through a period of considerable change, managing risk effectively and demonstrating strong financial acumen.
Self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity are the co-operative values that motivate us and shape our approach to education. We bring them to life through the way we run our schools, the style of teaching in the classroom and the culture throughout the school community and the Trust in general.
Our aim is to deliver excellent educational outcomes for our students, so we are seeking someone with a track-record of improving attainment and progress, a clear understanding of the current educational landscape, and experience of working closely with key government departments.
We also have access to expertise and resources from the Co-op itself. From vocational learning opportunities and curriculum enrichment to strong governance and financial support for our growth plans, it will be your job to nurture and develop this unique relationship.
Encouraging autonomy and independence is fundamental to our way of thinking, because in education we know that one size does not fit all. This means giving each of our academies the ability to respond to the needs of their own communities, with local understanding and local knowledge. The ability to empower those around you will be key to your success and the success of the Trust.
We believe in fair and equitable remuneration. We will offer a competitive salary to attract the right candidate, within our policy of a maximum salary difference of 1:10 between our lowest and highest paid colleagues.
If you’re a strategic leader and committed educationalist, with experience in an organisation of similar scale and complexity, steeped in the skills and knowledge of school improvement, able to manage risk and deal with financial complexity, with the credibility that’s required to lead a high profile Trust - and believe co-operation can achieve great things, get in touch.

Captivating minds through co-operation
Through a great education we are changing the lives of young people. Built on the same principles as all cooperatives across the world, we work with academies to empower teachers and young people to work together for a better education and a better community.
We have been recognised by the Sutton Trust Charity and the Education Policy Institute as one of the top performing multi-academy trusts for disadvantaged students. What makes our Trust unique is that we are sponsored by the Co-op Group.
That close relationship means that we benefit from all of the business expertise that has seen the Co-op grow to one of the most respected, ethically driven and successful businesses in the country. Popular with students, parents and teachers, we began in 2010 with just two academies. One in Manchester and one in Stoke-on-Trent. Two years later, in 2012, we began to work with a cluster of academies in Leeds and by 2014 we had five academies in Leeds; made up of one secondary and four primary academies. Pragmatic in our approach to growth we worked closely and co-operatively to improve all of our academies. We now have 28 academies across Greater Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, The Wirral and West Yorkshire.
Our Values
Co-op Academies Trust is committed to the values shared by cooperatives everywhere:
Self-help – we support learners, parents, carers and staff to help themselves
Self-responsibility – we encourage learners, parents, carers and staff to take responsibility for, and answer to their actions
Democracy – we give our learners, parents, carers and staff a say in the way we run our schools
Equality – we believe that the voice of each individual should be heard
Equity – we run our schools in a way that is fair and unbiased
Solidarity – we share interests and common purposes with our learners, parents, carers and staff, and with other schools in the communities we serve
We strive to demonstrate the following ethical values in everything we do:
Openness – we believe in being open with colleagues in our schools and beyond, children and their families, sharing information and ideas to raise standards and life chances
Honesty – we act in a professional and respectful manner in our dealings with everyone
Social responsibility – we maximise our impact on the people in our communities while minimising our footprint on the world
Caring for others – we treat everyone as we wish to be treated ourselves, understanding that children only have one childhood
We use our simple ‘Ways of Being Co-op’ to demonstrate our values:
• Do what matters most
• Be yourself, always
• Show you care
• Succeed together
