Allestree Woodlands School is a school with a recently updated values and vision, and a committed governing board. The board invites applications for a Clerk to the Governors position. As a stand-alone academy, the governing board has the responsibilities for (i) ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction (ii) holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff and (iii) overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent. The Clerk reports to the board and assists the board in conducting these functions through administering and supporting its activities and offering guidance in terms of good practice.
As a school we strive for the highest standard in all things, including governance, and so we are looking for the right candidate to assist the board. The full governing board meets five times a year for minuted business meetings and also has two major subcommittees that the Clerk supports – a total of approximately 16 evening meetings per year during term time, each lasting approximately two hours. We follow governance good practice, including guidance from the National Governance Association and maintain links with the local authority. We use GovernorHub to help facilitate governing board business. At present most of this is happening remotely, including meetings.
The ideal candidate will:
• have knowledge of good governance through previous experience or otherwise
• be skilled at recording meetings including minutes and agreed actions
• be organised and with the Chair of Governors and Headteacher be able to plan and administer the business of the board, maintain records, and ensure agreed actions are followed up
