Job overview

The University of Huddersfield is one of the UK’s most successful, innovative and modern institutions. Recognised as a gold-rated university by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), it has progressed positively in major league tables and won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2017; ranking 1st again in England this year for professionally qualified teaching staff. A major agent of social mobility it has continued to transform over the last ten years - going from strength to strength in pursuit of its mission to be an inspiring and innovative University of international renown.

Housed within this dynamic institution, the School of Education and Professional Development is an award-winning School comprising highly experienced professionals committed to increasing understanding of education, learning and youth work through high quality research. It offers its students an excellent experience; developing them to be superb professionals, critical thinkers and action researchers. Its courses feature consistently in the top ten nationally in the National Student Survey and its graduate employment record is exceptionally good. In the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) 94% of the School’s research was celebrated as being world class or of international importance.

In light of the upcoming retirement of Professor Pete Sanderson, the School is now seeking to appoint a new Dean to build on its existing strengths during a period of unprecedented change. A superb strategic leader with significant managerial experience, the new postholder will bring the requisite academic credentials and track record of delivering excellence to operate credibly in a progressive and ambitious environment. A first-rate communicator they will have an excellent grasp of the current and emerging policy trends in this space and the ambassadorial qualities required to represent the School across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. A key member of the University’s Senior Management Team, with a direct reporting line to the Vice-Chancellor, the new Dean will also make a pivotal contribution to the strategic progression and academic innovation of the wider University.
