The European School Copenhagen is seeking an experienced, ambitious and internationally oriented Deputy Director  

Would you like to head up a new international high school and play a key role in developing Denmark’s only European School? 


As Deputy Director, you will have responsibility for the school’s secondary department and have a leadership role in the school’s management team. Together, you will be responsible for the strategic development of the school in collaboration with staff, students and parents. 

We are seeking an experienced and committed leader, who can keep a cool head and set the direction in a busy working day.

Your first important task will be to prepare and establish the school's upper secondary (high school) department.


We expect you to: 

  • have extensive leadership experience at upper secondary level, ideally from an international school  
  • have management qualifications
  • be able to work strategically with school development 
  • be systematic, dynamic and decision-oriented and to think holistically
  • be effective and possess good communications skills
  • have a clear and cooperative management style 
  • have high expectations for the students
  • be fluent in English and have a working knowledge of Danish or be fluent in Danish and have a working knowledge of English. French is also an advantage.

The European School opened in August 2014 and is a publicly funded international school in Copenhagen under ongoing development. The European School has a Danish, English and French language section. The school’s secondary department opened in august 2018 and in August 2020, the school will open the upper secondary department/high school. 

The European School Copenhagen is an Accredited European School (AES) following the curriculum of the European Schools and is primarily aimed at children of international citizens living and working in the capital region of Denmark, including employees of the European Environment Agency. The education is focused on achieving a high academic level and is based on the European Schools’ principles of intercultural tolerance and understanding, and the school’s own core values.

The school currently has approximately 500 students. When the school is fully developed, there will be around 1,000 students at the school from nursery to upper secondary. Students who successfully complete upper secondary at the European School Copenhagen are awarded the European Baccalaureate (EB) diploma.

Experience and knowledge of the European Schools is an advantage but not a requirement as you will get a thorough introduction to the principles and curriculum of the European Schools. 

The European School Copenhagen is formally established as a part of Sankt Annæ Gymnasium with a Director as the overall head of both schools. Work is currently in process to separate the European School from Sankt Annæ Gymnasium, which means that the Deputy Director at that time becomes Director of the European School.

Terms and conditions of employment

Recruitment and remuneration are subject to the terms of the current collective agreement.


Employment start date 1st March 2020 

The first interview will take place on Wednesday 15th January after 4:30pm and the second interview on Monday 27th January after 6:00pm. Please note that there will be a test of key skills between the two interviews.

About

The European School Copenhagen is an accredited school under the internationally acknowledged system of European Schools, known for their high academic standards and declared mission to build bridges between cultures.

The school is co-educational and offers a multicultural and multilingual education for nursery, primary and secondary students, from age 5 through 19.

European Schools follow the curriculum of the European Schools system, with a strong focus on learning languages and science to a very high standard. The education leads to the internationally recognised European Baccalaureate (EB) diploma.

The school opened in 2014 and currently has around 850 pupils in nursery class to secondary 5 across three language sections - English, Danish and French. The school is still growing the French language section and will see the first Secondary 7 classes graduate in the summer of 2023. When the school is fully phased in, there will be close to 1,000 students at the school from nursery class to secondary 7.

At the completion of Secondary 7, successful students are awarded the European Baccalaureate diploma, which is an officially recognised entry qualification for higher education in all EU member states and many other countries.

Location

The school is located in the Carlsberg City district of Copenhagen, in a state-of-the-art school building completed in October 2018. The school is close to the city centre and near public transport. The exciting new learning environment includes teaching and practice rooms, an auditorium, sports hall and other facilities, including a canteen and production kitchen, where the children help with the preparation of healthy school lunches.

The European School Copenhagen is a publicly funded international school under the Municipality of Copenhagen and education at the school is free of charge. The school was established to provide more international school places in Copenhagen and admission priority is therefore given to children of European Union institution staff members and international employees, who have come to Denmark to work.
