Nexus International School (Singapore) was founded in 2011 and is part of the Taylor’s Education Group. Since opening, the school has thrived in the popular residential area of Holland Village. Nexus will move into its new state of the art Aljunied campus in January 2020. Flexible and innovative learning spaces support learner agency and enhance the learning experience.

Nexus is an Apple Distinguished School and is proudly focused on encouraging both the teaching and learning to be innovative, interactive and inspiring.

Job Description - Deputy Heads of School (Primary or Secondary focus)

This is a rare opportunity to join Nexus at an exciting time as we move to our new school. The successful candidates will be part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and will contribute to the strategic development of Nexus at whole school level. You will have a significantly reduced teaching commitment to allow time for your leadership role. In addition to the SLT whole-school responsibilities, the successful candidate will have a growth mindset in order to lead an innovative curriculum either in Primary or Secondary. You will also be the SLT link person for Learning Area Leaders and/or Phase Leaders. We currently work with the IB PYP in our Primary School (Nursery to Year 6), and the English National Curriculum from Years 7 to 9, leading on to IGCSE and then the IB Diploma.

The Nexus SLT consists of Principal, two Heads of School, a Head of Operations and four Deputy Heads of School. We are seeking two outstanding persons to join our team:

  • Deputy Head of School (with a Primary School focus)
  • Deputy Head of School (with a Secondary School focus)

In the main, our classes have a maximum teacher to child ratio of 1:24 (although most classes enjoy lower ratios) dropping lower in our Nursery and Kindergarten class and as children specialise in their IB Diploma.  The student population is made up of nearly 50 different nationalities giving our school a truly global experience and an opportunity to forge learning-focused relationships with a diverse community of learners, parents and staff.

A deep understanding and commitment to inclusion is required and knowledge of working with BML (Bilingual, Multilingual Learners) would be desirable. Nexus has a well established Apple 1:1 scheme from Years 6 to 13 and digital technologies are used school-wide, so considerable interest and skill with the latest hardware and software is expected.

In addition, to your role we have extra-curricular activities that you are expected to support, based on your passions. Staff can manage and coach a sports team or run a CCA like Makerspace or Parkour.

Experience

Experience of middle leadership and curriculum design are essential. Leadership at school-wide level would be preferred, as would leading curriculum development and review.

As an IB School, experience of teaching either PYP or IB MYP/DP is essential. Experience of other curriculum models would be an advantage.

An awareness and empathy for international third-culture students and a diverse learning community is expected. Experience of building strong relationships with other schools would be an advantage, as would prior experience working in International Schools.

Knowledge or experience working in Innovative Learning Environments would be of benefit.

Nexus International School (Singapore) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Police Authorities.

What you can expect from Nexus

At Nexus we foster a strong community spirit within our school, we expect a can-do attitude and believe in supporting each other. We are looking for like-minded employees that want to be innovative in their roles, to try new techniques and to constantly learn through risk taking. We believe in developing our staff and have a commitment to providing ongoing professional learning and coaching to help you be more creative and dynamic in your role.

About Nexus International School (Singapore)

Nexus International School (Singapore) is an empowering, learning-focused community that values diversity and fosters growth. We are one big family, striving to create an honest and open community with our learners, parents and peers. What sets us apart is our commitment in doing things differently, both in our approach to work and our methods of teaching and learning.

As a private, co-educational international school, we cater to students between the ages of 3 and 18. The School enrolled its first learners in July 2011, accommodating over 900 students, representing more than 50 nationalities back then. Nexus is an authorised IB World School, offering both the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP).

In January 2020, after eight years of rapid growth at its existing campus, Nexus moved its operations to an iconic purpose-built campus located in the heart of Singapore. This facility was designed by educators and features versatile and innovative learning spaces that support learners and enhance the learning experience.

At Nexus, we offers the following curriculum that encompasses:

  • Early Years (PYP) learning includes elements of the Reggio Emilia Approach, which puts the natural development of children at the centre of its philosophy.
  • Primary Curriculum (PYP) is taught through inquiry, creating experiential and hands-on learning.
  • The Secondary Curriculum offers the Middle Year Programme (MYP) for Year 7-9 learners. Teaching and learning in the MYP is framed by inquiry, action and reflection
  • In Years 10 and 11, learners follow a full range of courses preparing them for IGCSE examinations.
  • In Years 12 and 13, learners follow the Diploma Programme.

We are committed to holistic, well-rounded education and encourage our students to fully participate in school life. With over 90 Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) to choose from and a robust Singapore ACSIS sports program, students have numerous opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities. Various opportunities exist for learners to be involved in community service involvement and learner-led initiatives across the school.
