Job overview

Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral)

Required for September 2019

Salary L21- L25 (£65,383 - £72,119)

This popular, oversubscribed and fully inclusive school is seeking to appoint an outstanding Deputy Headteacher, to oversee the school’s pastoral system and students’ personal development.

The successful candidate will be a highly visible, supportive and approachable individual who will implement and evaluate strategies to promote the highest standards of attendance, behaviour and welfare across the school.  He or she will further embed the CHARACTER values which already permeate the school, will develop the student leadership structure, and be responsible for the further development of PSHE, RSE and SMSC.  He or she will oversee the school’s team of experienced Heads of Houses, Deputy Heads of Houses, Student Managers and Tutors.

Denefield School is a successful standalone academy providing high quality education to over 1100 students aged 11 to 18.  The school has excellent facilities, is financially stable, and has recently benefited from considerable investment.  Our strap line, ‘Enabling potential, expecting the best’ is at the heart of the school’s work.  In February 2018 Ofsted graded the school as ‘good’, noting ‘Pupils behave well in the school. They are kind and respectful towards each other and their teachers. They wear their uniform with pride.’  We strive to equip our students with the skills, academic qualifications and personal attributes to thrive in the modern world.

This role will suit candidates with previous school leadership experience who have the necessary energy, communication skills and presence to lead and inspire others.  While we expect that he or she will be an excellent classroom practitioner with a real interest in pedagogy, any subject specialism will be considered.

The successful candidate will be joining the school at an exciting time.  Our current Headteacher, who, with her experienced leadership colleagues and dedicated team of staff, has created a cohesive, happy and very popular school, is moving on to new challenges at the end of the year.  The new Headteacher was appointed in December 2018 and takes up his post in September 2019.  The pastoral Deputy Headteacher will thus be an instrumental part of the team that will take Denefield to yet further and more exciting heights.

We can offer:

  • enthusiastic, friendly and engaged students who are keen to learn
  • a talented and dedicated hardworking team of staff
  • a distinctive and caring ethos based on a set of CHARACTER values
  • well-cared for grounds set in pleasant surroundings
  • a community of supportive families and external partners
  • the opportunity to develop as a leader.

If you like what you have read so far then we would like to hear from you.  To find out more, please visit www.Denefield.org.uk. Visits to the school are warmly welcomed during the weeks commencing Monday 18 March. Please contact the Headteacher’s PA on 0118 972 8952 to arrange a convenient time.

Denefield School is committed to safeguarding children; successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.  CVs will not be accepted.  Denefield School is an equal opportunities employer and selects staff on merit, irrespective of race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.

Interview dates: Monday 1 April and Tuesday 2 April

Top reasons to work at Denefield

  • Strong behaviour systems – we believe in clear routines, appropriate responses and outstanding relationships fuelled by mutual respect. This means that students can learn in lessons and teachers can teach. We centralise detentions so that teachers are free to think about curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Great curriculum resources – clear and coherent schemes of work that mean you can focus on how you teach.
  • Commitment to high quality CPD – we’ll support and challenge you as an individual so you can develop your skills as a teacher - whatever your career stage or experience.
  • Work smarter not harder – we focus on evidence-based approaches where teacher-time spent is commensurate with the impact on student outcome. This means, for example, that we use whole-class feedback rather than individual comments because at Denefield, we want you spending time on things that will actually make a difference!
  • Staff well-being as a priority – we care about our staff as teachers and as people. Teams work very closely together and support each other day-to-day. Our commitment to your health and well-being is centred around making sure you are only asked to do the things that make the most difference to our students, but we also sign up to initiatives like 'bike to work' and offer all staff a free winter flu vaccination and access to an employee assistance programme.

We welcome applications from international teachers and are able to sponsor eligible candidates. Please come and visit or get in touch to find out more about Denefield.

Denefield is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All short-listed candidates will be subject to online searches and any successful candidates will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check along with other relevant pre-employment checks. CVs will not be accepted
